John Lindberg: Western Edges
Lindberg has developed into one of the most talented bassists on the scene, powerful, flexible, boasting a deep sound and wonderful fat resonance, all deployed with sensitivity and taste. What strikes the listener straight away is his splendid understanding with Calogero. Three of the saxophonist's tunes appear on the album, and it is his "Ashoka" which first introduces the airy interplay between twisting bass and nuanced baritone saxophone that serves as one of the group's signature sounds. And then the delicious blend of bowed bass and baritone saxophone which starts "Ethereal Extensions" confirms that favorable impression.
A similar intermingling on "Rumble Paint," this time in unison, frames a showcase for LaBarbera's well chosen placement of timbre. Other highlights include the bouncy "Twixt D And E," reprised from the repertoire of the String Trio of New York, and the rich theater of Lindberg's "Raptors" in which the bassist explores the percussive potential of his instrument before his arco sawing circles in consort with Calogero's baritone over crackling drums, evoking the soaring flight of the titular birds, presaging a conclusion of gentle harmonics. This threesome merits a regular place in Lindberg's discography.
