Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown: Jazz Impressions and Good Sport

Everyone knows the Vince Guaraldi soundtrack A Charlie Brown Christmas (Fantasy Records, 1965). However, Guaraldi composed and performed music for many other Peanuts-related projects, two of which have been recently released. They represent the beginning and end of the journey: Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown was recorded in 1964, one year before the broadcast of A Charlie Brown Christmas; 1975's You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown was the penultimate soundtrack Guaraldi recorded before he died in 1976.

The Vince Guaraldi Trio recorded this music for Fantasy Records in 1964 to accompany a documentary profiling Peanuts creator Charles Schulz that was never televised. The album was a hit despite lacking the expected promotional push of the documentary. This two-CD edition features the original album, along with a second disc containing alternate takes and additional material. "Oh, Good Grief" begins the set with lyrical swing, very much in the mainstream jazz tradition, while also demonstrating Guaraldi's way with melody. "Pebble Beach' is a bossa nova, while "Linus and Lucy" is the first take on a classic cue. The Brazilian feel employs a Shekere in addition to the drum kit, a more Latin groove than the better-known version. "Blue Charlie Brown" is the longest track, featuring excellent blues piano playing. "Frieda (With the Naturally Curly Hair)" is a catchy tune with a rhythmic theme. The alternate takes provide insight into the evolution of the arrangements. "Linus and Lucy (Studio Test)" shows a stripped-down solo piano version of the classic theme, while "Linus and Lucy (Take 3)" gives another version of the trio treatment with a shaker. The trio also interprets the standards "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Autumn Leaves," making the alternate takes disc a satisfying program in its own right.

Vince Guaraldi recorded this music in 1975 for the animated special of the same name: the soundtrack has not previously been released. While the music is based on Guaraldi's compositional style and piano playing, the sound has become much more contemporary. He makes extensive use of the electric piano, as well as the ARP String Ensemble. "Motocross" features an insistent Latin electric bass line, along with acoustic piano, string ensemble, synthesizer, and electric piano solos. Some of the solos here sound like synthesizers, which are uncredited, so an electric piano may have produced them. "Peppermint Patty" is a traditional jazz waltz, while the title tune is a swinging tune augmented by lots of string synthesizer. "Linus and Lucy" is a tango with electric piano and ARP, plus synthesizer solo. The album also includes four bonus tracks from Bicycles are Beautiful, a film that Guaraldi scored in 1974. The title tune is a traditional swinging piano trio track. "Bicycle Ballad" is lovely, while "Bicycle Bounce" is well named: a bossa nova with acoustic and electric piano. "Bicycle Wizard" closes the album with a kinetic rhythm that emulates the feel of bicycle riding. Special mention should be made of the version on 45 rpm Zoetrope Picture Disc. As it plays, scenes from the animated special come to life on the record. Very striking! With my phone, I found that I got the best results when I viewed with my camera set to Slow Motion.
