Al Di Meola: Twentyfour
Al Di Meola'sTwentyfour is a textured blend of acoustic and electric guitar set against a diverse palette of orchestral colors. Initially conceived as an acoustic project during the pandemic, the album evolved to include contributions from woodwinds, brass, percussion, keyboards, and a chamber orchestra. Di Meola, a New Jersey native and Berklee School of Music graduate, performs on guitar and multiple other instruments.

The album's highlights include "Ava's Dance in the Moonlight," where lush orchestration complements Di Meola's nylon-string guitar, creating a cinematic soundscape. This contrasts with the stripped-down "For Only You," featuring Di Meola alone on nylon guitar, and "Precocious," where tabla, cajon and piano provide a more intimate setting. These tracks showcase Di Meola's skill as a producer, co-producing with Hernan Romero to create a cohesive and balanced sonic journey despite the variety of instruments and styles.

The album opens with a building composition "Fandango," which blends flamenco elements with modern classical and jazz sensibilities. This sets the tone for the album's diverse instrumentation and the alternating currents of heated and tranquil moments. "Tears of Hope" continues this theme, featuring a cinematic orchestration with Di Meola's fluid guitar lines. "Esmeralda" and "Capriccio Suite" bring in influences from classical, flamenco, and Indian classical music, showcasing Di Meola's ability to blend diverse genres seamlessly.

In "Eden," Ivan Lopez Siuxx provides vocals, adding a new dimension to the album's texture. This track and "Close Your Eyes" bring a contemporary feel with a blend of world and flamenco rhythms, supported by strings, keyboards, and percussion. "Paradox of Puppets" and "Genetik" bring Di Meola's electric guitar to the forefront, harking back to his earlier fusion style ala Elegant Gypsy and Electric Rendezvous, while "Testament 24" offers a romantic, orchestral sound.

Throughout Twentyfour, Di Meola demonstrates a multi-layered approach to his playing, focusing on melody and counter melodies and chords. This is evident in the "Immeasurable" suite, divided into three parts, where Di Meola's lead playing creates various textures.

Twentyfour is Al Di Meola's evolution as a musician and producer. The album's blend of acoustic and electric elements, diverse instrumentation, and well-crafted compositions through various styles offers listeners a rich and immersive experience.
