Track review of "Baby Don't Cry"

Lucinda Belle: Think Big: Like Me
Jazz vocalist and harpist Lucinda Belle has an infectious enthusiasm and personality. Her newest single, "Baby Don't Cry" is a determined appeal to stay strong through tough times while looking forward to better times ahead. The soul-inspired groove keeps the song moving while her lyrics acknowledge hardship while putting things in perspective.

"Baby Don't Cry" is a far cry from Belle's last single, "I'll Be Loving You," from late last year. While the latter was awash in reverb and recalled an earlier era , her latest is bouncy and heavily reminiscent of trendier, more contemporary artists like the late Amy Winehouse and Elle King. Her subtle use of the harp remains a wonderfully tasteful and unique addition to both tracks.

"Baby Don't Cry" swings between rubato sections with yearning, passionate vocals and danceable passages driven by the Charleston rhythm. It is in the rubato sections that Belle's harp playing is most clearly heard and adds dimension and even more sweetness to the already emotion laden moment. These contrast wonderfully with the more rhythmic parts, which bring her message of perseverance home in a sonic way.

Belle's latest single is a perfect fit for fans of the aforementioned Winehouse and King, as well as those looking for a light-hearted pop/jazz sound.
