Spencer Zweifel: The Life or Death Situation
Spencer Zweifel is an accomplished jazz pianist who graduated in 2019 with a degree in jazz studies from the University of Northern Colorado. He won best pop/rock soloist in the 2018 Downbeat magazine student awards. In 2021, Spencer completed a master's in jazz studies at William Paterson University, where he studied with Bill Charlap, Aaron Diehl and Geoffrey Keezer. In 2020 he formed the Spencer Zweifel Quintet, which has released two records, including Before It's Too Late (Self Produced, 2022).

"Here's the Situation" begins strong, with drums and piano in collaboration. It has an upbeat tempo, with lovely horn lines and a very jazzy saxophone solo. There is a steady collaboration from the rhythm guitar. A slow-paced interlude follows, with piano, trumpet and rhythm section. All ends nicely. The introduction of "Sound and the Fury" is a slow procession that introduces the horns, led by the trumpet, with strong piano. The fury picks up with a screaming saxophone improvisation and bass. The horns proceed, adding a nice organ solo, ending with a slow interlude. "Factor Reset" has an upright bass opening at a medium tempo, highlighting the horns, with alto and tenor saxophones and organ improvising together. The rhythm section provides a steady tempo, and the ending is smooth.

On "The Zone," the rhythm section is highlighted with an elegance of style that is quite jazzy, complemented by explosive piano and saxophone improvisations. "Life and Death" is an eclectic tune that begins with a piano introduction by Zweifel followed by drums and guitar with a fusion sound. The horns proceed with a nice melody. There is an awesome collaboration of piano, trumpet and saxophone and a slow interlude of trumpet, ending softly with Zweifel on piano.

"Medusa" has a soothing electric guitar opening. Tenor saxophone plays a calming tempo, backed by horns. The electric guitar gives a commanding performance with rock riffs, giving life to "Medusa." "The World of the Future" features the horn section, followed by a piano solo by Zweifel in an upbeat jazzy tempo. The alto saxophone solo is very nice. "In The Palm of Your Hand" has a Latin tempo that the horn section grooves to splendidly. "MetaMorfosis" has a slow introduction of upright bass, then merges into a rhythm of drums, trumpet and tenor arrangements. The track transforms into a smooth jazz piano with snares of the drums on interludes of percussion and morfbeats of instruments.
