2019: Striking A Balance In Review, Part 1

Read "2019: Striking A Balance In Review, Part 1" reviewed by Henning Bolte

Part 1 | Part 2 Every year the 'Best-of' game is underway again. But, “best of what?" is the immediate question. It's almost impossible for fishes of prey to hunt in a huge herring swarm, or for birds of prey to hunt in those huge budgerigar swarms. 'The best' is a choice from the ...

2019: The Year in Jazz

Read "2019: The Year in Jazz" reviewed by Ken Franckling

ECM Records celebrated a golden year. The music and its makers figured prominently on the big screen. The National Endowment for the Arts welcomed four new NEA ...

Mike Jurkovic's Best Releases of 2019

Read "Mike Jurkovic's Best Releases of 2019" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

It was this dozen plus of recordings, among many that deserve mention, that gratefully, again and again and again, pulled my attention away from binge watching the destruction of our cherished, yet all too vulnerable democracy. These are the recordings of 2019 that made it evident that we all need to remain vigilant and engaged, or ...

Portraits Jazz Project

Included in Karl Ackermann's Best Releases of 2019. Portraits featuring Adalia Tara was born in a coffeehouse in Sedona, Arizona, on a sultry summer evening in 2016. An impromptu coming together of local Sedona jazz talent behind the powerful vocals of Adalia Tara attracted a following that overwhelmed the capacity of the small venue by the second show. Performing thereafter at larger venues, resorts, and vineyards, the band was also featured in the the L’Auberge Summer Concert Series. Portraits has consistently filled rooms to over capacity. This album captures the spark and energy born of those early shows. Adalia is an extraordinary singer-songwriter talent, who began writing songs at an early age

Well, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome continues to be a challenge, as it has been since mid-2014. 2019 represents, in fact, the worst year when it comes to the actual number of articles written. Still, I've been finding an increasingly satisfying niche in the arena of in-depth, detailed and extensive/exhaustive (exhausting, for you as much as I!!) articles. ...

The past couple of years unveiled a whirlwind of political confusion that seems to have finally slopped over into the world of jazz music. Like many individuals, in 2019 artists felt the need to speak out across the mainstream social media platforms and use their somewhat wider reaching voices to animate a like-minded community as well ...
