Steve Swell: Astonishments

Read "Astonishments" reviewed by John Pietaro

Among the trombonists of New York's downtown scene, or uptown for that matter, no one even comes close to Steve Swell. His level of artistry, ability to create within any sonic cloud, compositional strengths and sheer fortitude set a new standard decades ago. Deemed a veteran of the new music that tore up the 1970s and ...

DUX Orchestra: Duck Walks Dog (With Mixed Results)

Read "Duck Walks Dog (With Mixed Results)" reviewed by John Sharpe

The cover of the 1994 archival recording Duck Walks Dog (With Mixed Results) by the DUX Orchestra presents an intriguing line up which combines American free jazzers with Swedish baritone saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. Even within the New York City contingent there is diversity, as veteran stickman Walter Perkins (who played with Sonny Rollins, Roland Kirk and ...

Rocco John Iacovone: Peace and Love: A Tribute to Will Connell

Read "Peace and Love: A Tribute to Will Connell" reviewed by Troy Dostert

But with this live recording by his octet, the Improvisational Composers Ensemble, that could change. The December 2014 performance at John Zorn's club, the Stone had ...

Loss Of A Quiet Giant: Will Connell 1938-2014

Immediately the jazz and new music community rallied and the outpouring of love for Will was apparent. We’d all been preparing for his big moment at the front of the ...

Steve Swell: Unlimited Musical Possibilities

Read "Steve Swell: Unlimited Musical Possibilities" reviewed by Victor L. Schermer

When that happens, opinions and emotions abound. Reactions vary from disgust to excitement and enthusiasm, and it is ...

Steve Swell: Sound Miracles

Read "Steve Swell: Sound Miracles" reviewed by Gordon Marshall

Trombonist Steve Swell captures the energy of a big band in the close quarters of a small group. An alumnus of Buddy Rich's and Lionel Hampton's bands on the one hand, and collaborator with Anthony Braxton on the other, he seems bound to have fixed upon such a hybrid configuration at some point. But how an ...
