Mike Allen

Born: May 12, 1965

MIKE ALLEN-saxophonist. The 39 year-old Kingston Ontario native is profiled in Mark Miller's "Miller Companion To Jazz In Canada", has a Master's degree in Jazz from New York University and was featured in a Globe and Mail article that listed him as one of a half-dozen "Interesting Canadians To Watch". Over his 20-year career he has worked with many well-known jazz artists including trombonist Julian Priester, drummer Donald Bailey, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, saxophonist Gary Bartz, pianist Don Friedman, and multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson. Mike is a longtime member of the Montreal-based guitar legend Sonny Greenwich's group, with whom he recorded two CDs "Standard Idioms" (Kleo) and "Fragments Of A Memory" (Cornerstone)

Randy Raine-Reusch

Born: May 2, 1952

Randy Raine-Reusch is a composer, concert-artist and improvisor specializing in New and Experimental Music for world instruments. An innovator interested in extending the boundaries of music, he has created distinct new performance styles on a number of world instruments from his collection of 700. Raine-Reusch has spent over thirty years exploring the relationship of music to psychology, philosophy, and spiritual or religious practices. He studied at the Creative Music Studio in the 70's with artists such as Fred Rzewski, Jack Dejohnette and Karl Berger, before going overseas to study with master musicians in Australia, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma and the Philippines, as well as with "National Treasures" in Korea and Japan

Stefan Smulovitz

Born: December, 1971

Stefan Smulovitz is a highly accomplished musician (viola & laptop) and composer. His work as a programmer has led to the development of custom software called Kenaxis, a major innovation in the use of the computer as a real-time instrument. Kenaxis VBAP, his newest software, allows for performance in an immersive surround sound environment. He has performed as part of John Zorn’s Vancouver Cobra project ,with Uri Caine as part of his Goldberg Variations, with pianist Paul Plimley, guitarist Fred Frith, the 15th Annual Time Flies Festival, and the NOW Orchestra. At the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (2002-5), Stefan has played with many of the world’s best including Evan Parker, Mark Dresser, Lori Freedman, Paul Rutherford, Francois Houle, Jesse Zubot, Mark Feldman, Peggy Lee, Torsten Muller, and Ron Samworth. His electroaccoustic work has won awards nationally (CEC’s JTTP competition) as well as recently being part of an exhibit at MOCA in LA as part of a Frank Gehry exhibit

Ayelet Rose Gottlieb

Born: March 6, 1979

Jerusalem-born musician Ayelet Rose Gottlieb draws on jazz, Middle-Eastern, and Jewish musical influences to forge an exhilaratingly eclectic sound. At once cutting- edge and rooted in tradition, her vibrant compositions are shape-shifting mélanges of textures and rhythms. A frequent collaborator of forward-thinking artists like composer John Zorn, pianist Anat Fort, and the ETHEL string quartet, Gottlieb performs both original works and covers that she reimagines via her one-of-a-kind sensibility. Kevin Jackson

Born: March 7, 1993

Kevin Jackson is a trombonist and educator from Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Kevin obtained a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Lethbridge Alberta. He has also recently completed his Masters of Music studying with VSO principal tubist Peder MacLellan at UBC. During his time at UBC Kevin played a variety of roles including section leader, principle trombone for Symphony and Symphonic Wind ensembles and lead trombone for Jazz Ensemble 1. Julian MacDonough

Born: September 23, 1976

Julian MacDonough is an award winning American jazz musician, studio drummer, and educator based in the Pacific NW. Since 1991, Julian has performed with over 200 musical acts and recorded 150+ albums to date. He is honored to have toured with such notables as Jimmy Heath, Harold Mabern, Joey DeFranscesco, Terell Stafford, Peter Bernstein, Joe Magnarelli, Gary Smulyan, Marcus Printup, Walter Banding Jr., and Dr. Lonnie Smith. A passionate educator, Julian holds over 20 years teaching experience with students of all ages in both private lessons and in leading combo classes. He has guest taught at institutions throughout the Pacific NW, as an adjunct professor at Cornish College of the Arts, Central Washington University, and Western Washington University, with the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, the Ferndale High School Jazz Band, the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, and as a guest artist instructor at institutions throughout western Canada and the US

Leora Cashe

Born: February 3, 1961

From her home town of Vancouver to Italy, Belgium and the UK, Leora's rich resounding voice and dynamic stage presence have garnered numerous accolades. She reaches into the core of the listener with an exquisite range of emotional power and ignites a soulful perspective; weaving together jazz, blues and gospel. She has recorded and performed in concert with many celebrated Canadian artists including Denzal Sinclaire, Jim Byrnes, Shari Ulrich, Canadian jazz legend Tommy Banks for CBC Radio and TV, and opened for the late Stanley Turrentine at Vancouver's International Jazz Festival. Jaelem Bhate

Born: August 20, 1993

Jaelem Bhate is a conductor, composer, and bandleader from Vancouver, B.C. whose musical diversity has come to define his career. Equally comfortable in the jazz and classical worlds, he has been hailed as one of Canada’s most promising emerging artists. Jaelem obtained his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting in May, 2019 from UBC in Vancouver, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in percussion performance also from UBC. He has maintained parallel studies in composition throughout his time as a student. As a composer, Jaelem has been praised for possessing “a personal and highly effective voice” (Canadian Music Center, 2018) and has written music for a wide array of ensembles and soloists
