Doug Finke
Born:
Doug discovered jazz in the 1950's as a young band student at York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. He was heavily influenced by the simple, gutsy style of Chicago trombonist Jim Beebe. By the early 1960's Doug was playing and touring with the Original Salty Dogs Jazz Band, the Smokey Stover Firehouse Band, Bob Scobey’s Frisco Jazz Band, Art Hodes and Wild Bill Davison. These early years took him to clubs and festivals in and out of the United States. In 1964 he made a hard decision and left the music business to focus on raising a family and pursuing a corporate career. He made a brief return to music during the Vietnam years, playing and writing arrangements with the 3rd Marine Air Wing Band in El Toro, CA. But it wasn’t until 1996, at the urging of drummer and longtime friend Wayne Jones, that he began studying anew

Chris Greive

Born:
Born in Perth, Western Australia in 1969, CHRIS GREIVE started playing music at the age of 11. Trumpet was his first choice because he preferred the look and sound of his dad's Louis Armstrong record to his Chris Barber album. But he was told to play trombone instead because his lips were too fat. Undaunted by this flagrant deception (Louis' lips were hardly slimline). Chris gained a Bmus degree, was a finalist in the Australian Jazz Brass Awards 1996 and has made a big impression since moving to Scotland. He has recorded with his own band, NeWt, as well as the Haftor Medboe Group, Salsa Celtica and Live Sciences

J.J. Johnson

Born:
Considered by many to be the finest jazz trombonist of all time, J.J. Johnson somehow transferred the innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his more awkward instrument, playing with such speed and deceptive ease that at one time some listeners assumed he was playing valve (rather than slide) trombone! Johnson toured with the territory bands of Clarence Love and Snookum Russell during 1941-42 and then spent 1942-45 with Benny Carter's big band.
He made his recording debut with Carter (taking a solo on "Love for Sale" in 1943) and played at the first JATP concert (1944). Johnson also had led plenty of solo space during his stay with Count Basie's Orchestra (1945-46). During 1946-50, he played with all of the top bop musicians including Charlie Parker (with whom he recorded in 1947), the Dizzy Gillespie big band, Illinois Jacquet (1947-49) and the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool Nonet. His own recordings from the era included such sidemen as Bud Powell and a young Sonny Rollins. J.J., who also recorded with the Metronome All-Stars, played with Oscar Pettiford (1951) and Miles Davis (1952) but then was outside of music, working as a blueprint inspector for two years (1952-54).
