The Nels Cline Singers: Share The Wealth

by Mark Sullivan
Guitarist Nels Cline has led the Nels Cline Singers since 2002. While they have sometimes had guest performers on their recordings, the core band has been a trio of Cline, drummer Scott Amendola and bassist Trevor Dunn (originally Devin Hoff). This album expands the group to a sextet with the addition of saxophonist Skerik, keyboardist Brian ...
The Nels Cline Singers: Share The Wealth

by Mike Jurkovic
A work of pummeling beauty, exhaustion and exhilaration await at the end of genre rogue guitarist Nels Cline's upheaval Share the Wealth, eighty minutes of magical, maniacal, free jam composition that, in perhaps a few more years down the line--if the line makes it past Election Day--we'll argue stands right up there with such and such ...

by Doug Collette
A native Californian currently headquartered in Brooklyn, Will Bernard's geographical touchpoints mirror the expanse of solo and collaborative projects to which he's contributed over the course of his career. Just a few of the names appearing in his discography are also indicative of the guitarist's broadly eclectic approach: eccentric singer/composer Tom Waits, drummer extraordinaire Stanton Moore ...

Skerik

The Syncopated Taint Septet formed unexpectedly and organically in the summer of 2002 when Skerik was at home in Seattle between tours. Soon, the horn count increased as Skerik enlisted fellow Seattle musicians Dave Carter on trumpet, Hans Teuber on alto saxophone on flute, and Steve Moore on trombone and Wurlitzer electric piano, packing the harmonies (and the stage) with a five-horn front line. From the beginning, Skerik invited all of the musicians to suggest ideas and write music for the band

Tarik Abouzied: Happy Orchestra: Baba

by Paul Rauch
Go ahead, laugh it up. After all, how could you possibly take seriously a band called Happy Orchestra, that uses the classic yellow happy face as a logo in this visceral world of jazz we inhabit? How could this leader, a drummer in fact, produce music that is both danceable, and satisfying to the elite jazz ...

Mike Dillon: Band of Outsiders

by Dave Wayne
There are so many different ways to rebel in life, and Mike Dillon has done them all. Or so it seems, if the music on Band of Outsiders is any indication. Dillon is that rare musician who can take tropes from any number of disparate musical worlds-metal and Brazilian samba school for example-mash them together and ...
Fontanelle: Vitamin F

by Dave Wayne
The sheer improbability of Vitamin F alone is almost reason enough to savor it. But this is one heck of a great jazz recording, so Fontanelle's back story is worth pondering. Formed out of the ruins of Jessamine, one of the few Seattle bands from the mid-1990s to buck the grunge craze, Fontanelle recorded three albums ...
