Marco Eneidi

Born: November 1, 1956

Born on All Saints Day, 1956 in Portland, Oregon, Marco Eneidi's life in music began at the age of nine playing the clarinet while growing up in the San Francisco East Bay area of California. During high school he started playing the guitar in the finger picking style of the southern blues legends, played gut bucket bass in a jug band, and played clarinet in a Dixieland band which performed at nursing homes and the local pizzeria. At the age of twenty, Marco decided to get serious about music and finally began to practice upwards of twelve hours a day. In 1978 he got his first real job in music

Neil Leonard

Leonard works as a sound artist, saxophonist and composer. Recent works include concerts for saxophone and electronics, audio installation and multimedia performative interventions. Rova Saxophone Quartet

The Rova Saxophone Quartet was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in October 1977 by Jon Raskin, Larry Ochs, Andrew Voigt and Bruce Ackley. The ensemble performed its first concert at the 3rd Annual Free Music Festival at Mills College in Oakland, California, in February 1978. Inspired by a broad spectrum of musical influences-from Charles Ives, Edgard Varese, Olivier Messiaen and John Cage to John Coltrane, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy and Ornette Coleman-Rova began writing new material, touring, recording (its first album Cinema Rovaté was released on Ochs' Metalanguage label) and collaborating with such like-minded colleagues as guitarist Henry Kaiser and Italian percussionist Andrea Centazzo

Zim Ngqawana

Born: December 25, 1959

Zim Ngqawana has been hailed by Johannesburg's leading daily paper, The Star, as "The most visible, hardest working younger man in jazz." He is one of the new generation of South African musicians who are taking a fresh look at South Africa's jazz and traditional music heritage. Zim made his mark at the historic Inauguration of President Nelson Mandela in 1994, where he directed the 100 person 'Drums for Peace Ochestra', led an elite group of 12 Presidential drummers and featured as a solo saxophonist.

This recognition came after a late start and some tough struggles. Born in 1959 in Port Elizabeth (in South Africa's Eastern Cape), Zim was the youngest of five children who started playing flute at the age of 21. Although Zim was forced to drop out of school before completing university entrance requirements, his prowess won him a place at Rhodes University. He later went on to study for a diploma in Jazz Studies at the University of Natal.

Antonio Parker

Winston Mankunku Ngozi

Born: 1943

He was born in Retreat, Western Cape, in 1943, the first child in a musical family. He played piano at the age of seven, and later clarinet and trumpet. In his mid-teens he learned the alto and tenor saxophone. He cites John Coltrane, local saxophonist "Cups & Saucers", pianist Merton Barrow, as well as bassist Midge Pike as major influences. Mankunku chose to remain in his native Cape Town during apartheid. This meant that he was subjected to the Separate Amenities Act and similar apartheid legislation. A classic tale tells of his performance with an all-white big band in the Cape Town City Hall in 1964, where, because a mixed-race band was unlawful, he was forced to play behind a curtain so as to remain out of sight. In 1968 he recorded the famous blockbuster "Yakhal' Inkomo", with Early Mabuza, Agrippa Magwaza and Lionel Pillay

Adam Pieronczyk

Born: January 24, 1970

Leading Polish jazz saxophonist, composer, band leader and producer. 

Recognized by international media as one of the most interesting and creative European musicians and one of the greatest innovators in Polish jazz. 

As a leader he has released almost 30 albums that have received numerous awards. He was named 18 times Jazz Forum magazine's Best Soprano Saxophonist. He has been nominated 18 times for Poland's Fryderyk award (Polish Grammy) in altogether 4 categories, winning the 2 most important statuettes - Jazz Musician of The Year and Jazz Album of The Year.

Jeff Marx

Born: January 23, 1951

Marx's interest in jazz began in Detroit while he was a young man. From his earliest recollection, jazz was his music of choice. Seeking to learn more, in the '70's Marx made it to Berkeley to study with Hal Stein on the West Coast. In Oakland and San Francisco the Jazz scene was hot and Marx played with greats like Eddie Henderson and Mark Levine. Once jazz was in his blood, Marx went to New York for 14 years where he played with Reggie Workman, Steve Slagle, Guitarist Kevin McNeil, Donald Byrd, Ed Schuler, Jim Pepper, Gene Jackson, Ira Coleman, Santi DeBriano and Dave Stryker among others
