As an accomplished composer, esteemed saxophonist, vocalist, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition, she is quickly becoming one of the leading standard bearers of the art form. Her distinct musical approach to classic and original repertoire, which highlights her craft as a powerhouse singer and instrumentalist, is a captivating blend of tradition and innovation. She makes a considerable and dynamic contribution to the legacy of jazz while paying tribute to its heroes through her music. 

​The New York City native has amassed several distinctive honors for her musicianship:  NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Jazz Album, recipient of the SOUTH Arts Creative Jazz Road Artistic Residency, Downbeat Magazine’s Critics Poll Nominee for Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist and Vocalist and Rising New Artist (2023, 2022, 2021 & 2020),  two-time winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award, a recipient of the Fulbright Scholars Cultural Ambassador Grant and Chamber Music of America Performance Plus Grant (Sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation) among others. Thurman also has five full-length recordings as a leader to her credit. Her most recent project, “Confluence: Vol 1,” is a collaboration with master drummer Darrell Green and his quartet.

Benjamin’s electric presence and fiery sax work has shared stages with several legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots, and Macy Gray. As the bandleader of Lakecia Benjamin and Soul Squad, she melds the vintage sounds of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Meters with soaring, dance-floor worthy rhythms. Benjamin’s grooves take the classic vibe to a whole new level with sultry alto saxophone creating something special on every cut – be it a smoldering late-night ambiance, or a forceful jazz intensity, or even the tight funk multi-horn harmony sections.

Computer, sampler and sax. She is among the founders of three important experimental italian groups: Laboratorio di Musica e Immagine, Fastilio, Antenata.

Her own work spans different musical genres, from industrial to contemporary classic, as well as playing with and being directed by significant exponents of more “unorthodox” genres: Fred Frith, John Rose, Jhon Oswald, Butch Morris, and the italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino.

Her open approach to different media and art have led her to work frequently with choreographers, dancers, theatre companies and visual artists (including: MK, Teatro della Valdoca, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Laminarie, Umberto Bignardi, Luigi Gozzi, Compagnia di danza Monica Francia, Baby-Q, Le-gami).

Catherine Sikora

Tenor and soprano saxophonist, improviser and composer Catherine Sikora was first electrified by the sound of air vibrating in a metal tube when, as a child, she heard the wind playing tones and overtones in a metal gate. She has devoted her life to researching the magic of that sound with her saxophones, particularly in her solo work, which forms the main backbone of her creative output. Catherine’s first solo album ‘Jersey’ was released on Relative Pitch Records in July 2016. She followed this with “Warrior”, an all-soprano saxophone solo recording in 2019. Her next solo tenor recording, recorded live in Paris in summer of 2020, will be released in fall 2020. In addition to her solo work, Sikora works frequently in duo and larger settings, with Eric Mingus, Brian Chase, Ethan Winogrand, Ross Hammond, Christopher Culpo and Matteo Liberatore

John Steven "Pip" Doheny (born December 17, 1953), is a jazz tenor saxophonist and band leader, who also plays flute, clarinet, and alto saxophone. Doheny is also a jazz historian, and historian. Born in Seattle, Washington, and having spent his early career in Vancouver, Canada, he is now a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, where he is professor of music at Tulane University.

A versatile player, Aaron plays multiple woodwinds in all styles and has performed in many renowned groups, including the Aaron Hedenstrom Quintet, S. Carey, the John Raymond Project, the Javier Santiago Experiment, Nachito Herrera, The Remnant, and the Adam Meckler Quintet. Also a visionary composer, Aaron Hedenstrom has written compositions and arrangements for orchestra, band, big band, jazz combo, and chamber ensembles. But his biggest project has been the creation of the Aaron Hedenstrom Orchestra, a big band that plays all Hedenstrom originals and features many of the Twin Cities' and Wisconsin's finest jazz players

Rob Derke - saxophonist, educator, composer, arranger, producer, and conductor - has become known to a growing audience for his extreme versatility. Although he has made a statement in many musical styles, Rob has consistently incorporated his varied experience into jazz saxophone. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was educated at New York City's LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, later receiving his BM from the Manhattan School of Music and his MM from SUNY Purchase. Rob Derke has worked with or appeared with such jazz greats as Red Rodney, Davey Schildkraut, Clark Terry, the Heath brothers, Jon Faddis, Ray Vega, and Randy Brecker

Fred Staton

Born:

Staton is well acquainted with the feeling of jazz. Over the course of his century on earth, he’s been steeped in it. Born on Valentine’s Day, 1915, Staton’s musical life began with the strains of his mother’s player piano and 78 discs of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson. He cites a Johnny Hodges cut on an Ellington big band record played off the family’s Victrola as the inspiration for his life-long infatuation with the saxophone. A singer in his church’s gospel choir, Staton’s introduction to playing jazz came when the group’s sponsor brought in a full band’s worth of equipment, along with charts of popular music

Yacine Boulares

Described by Radio France internationale as “a Tunisian man in New York, one of the most talented jazzmen of his generation” Yacine Boulares is a French-Tunisian saxophonist and composer based in Brooklyn.

After graduating from the Paris National Conservatory Yacine moves to New York on a Fulbright scholarship in 2009 to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary music. New York exposes him to a myriad of different musics. Soon he starts touring with Fela Kuti's ex drummer Jojo Kuo and Haitian Kompa legends Tabou Combo. In their musics he finds a deep echo to his Tunisian roots.
