Saxophonist, Multi-Instrumentalist and Composer. Born Robert David Crail II on December 27, 1960 in Long Beach, California. Crail's received his early musical training while attending middle and high school in Long Beach. Many of his classmates went on to become professional session, jazz and symphony players. During his formative years played in a number of groups ranging from rock and jazz to punk. Early bands included: Maxilla, Cathedral of Tears and Tender Fury. After high school Crail attended California State University, Northridge eventually earning a B.A. degree in Music Education

Damani Phillips

Dr. Damani Philips is a native of Pontiac, MI, where he began playing at the age of 10. He currently serves as assistant professor of jazz studies and African-American studies at the University of Iowa, where he teaches applied jazz saxophone, directs jazz combos, and teaches courses in African-American music, jazz history, jazz theory and improvisation. Previously, Phillips was assistant professor of music (Jazz Studies) at Grinnell College, where he directed the jazz ensemble and taught jazz composition/arranging, jazz history, improvisation, musicianship and aural skills. Chris Fagan

Chris Fagan’s jazz education began under the mentorship of Bobby Bradford in the early 80’s when he attended Pomona College in Claremont California, a once fertile jazz colony that boasted the likes of James Newton, Arthur Blythe, and David Murray. Shortly thereafter, Fagan began snapping up local jazz gigs, and teaming up with heavyweight Los Angeles jazz talents such as Carl Burnett, Bob Maize, and Billy Childs. Fagan appeared at Claremont McKenna College’s Becket Jazz Festival with bassist Scott Colley and veteran drummer Dick Berk in 1984. During this period, Fagan also studied with modern post-bop vibes virtuoso, Charlie Shoemake and the noted avant-garde clarinetist John Carter, relationships that foreshadowed Fagan’s lifelong pursuit of jazz on all sides of the musical spectrum. After graduation from Pomona in 1985, Fagan spent a brief period in Washington DC appearing in funk bands throughout Northeast Washington

Brian Gorrell
Born:
Brian Gorrell serves as Head of the Jazz Studies Division for the University of Central Oklahoma School of Music. Gorrell, a former pianist for the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, also manages operation of the Jazz Lab Recording Studio and teaches Applied Saxophone, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Theory & Analysis, Music Technology, Jazz Improvisation, and Jazz Piano. Mr. Gorrell completed a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Central Oklahoma and received a master's degree in saxophone performance from Oklahoma City University. Equally proficient on both saxophone and keyboards, Gorrell has produced many album projects including In Some Other World (1995), Soulmates (1999), In The Swing of Christmas (2001), and The Jazz Company Live at the UCO Jazz Lab (2008)

Ryan Wilson

Ryan Wilson's sound is a jazz saxophone player that has the sound of all his predecessors like John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, and Bob Mintzer to name a few. Ryan was born and raised in the LA area close to Hollywood where he learned to play clarinet as a child maturing into a modern saxophone and EWI player. Ryan studied at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts in East Los Angeles and studied under many great and talented musicians. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and continues to study his music today. Ryan Wilson plays around the Los Angeles area at all the local jam sessions and can be found at places like Dinner House M and the Blue Whale in Downtown LA! More to come…

Saxophonist Rob Dixon has collaborated, performed and recorded with numerous national and Indianapolis based groups including Illinois Jacquet, Rufus Reid, Composer Bill Lee, The Count Basie Orchestra, Weldon Irving, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of tribe called quest, The Cleveland Heritage Jazz Orchestra, Drummer Mike Clark, The Headhunters, Cyn Layne, Melvin Rhyne, Charlie Hunter, The Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra, Composer and Pianist Steve Allee, Guitarist Dave Stryker and the Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra. Dixon recently recorded a new album as a leader that was produced by 7 string guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter

Ray Scro
Ray Scro has performed, studied and taught music for nearly fifty years in his home of Staten Island and throughout New York City. At age seven Scro began playing clarinet, which continues to share space on his bandstand next to tenor and soprano saxophones. Ray studied music at Brooklyn College in the early seventies, and received private instruction under saxophonist and guru Lee Konitz. He has played with Jimmy Knepper, Chuck Wayne, Charlie Persip, Chico Hamilton and many others.
After twenty years as a professional musician, Scro began a second career as music educator. He taught music in a Brooklyn middle school for three years before joining the music department at Curtis High School in Staten Island. Scro served as head of the Performing Arts Department for six years and has served as band director to this day. He directs the Curtis jazz band, where his experience and insight as a professional musician inform the next generation of jazz artists. Scro’s work as an educator has been acknowledged with an International Association of Jazz Educators scholarship, as well as an Arts Educator's award from the Council of Arts and Humanities of Staten Island.

Maria Grand
María Grand is a saxophonist, composer, educator, and vocalist. She moved to New York City in 2011. She has since become an important member of the city’s creative music scene, performing extensively in projects led by or including musicians such as Nicole Mitchell, Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn, Mary Halvorson, Jen Shyu, Aaron Parks, Fay Victor, Joel Ross, etc. María writes and performs her original compositions with her ensemble, DiaTribe; her debut EP “TetraWind” was picked as “one of the 2017’s best debuts” by the NYC Jazz Record and her full-length album Magdalena was praised by major publications such as the New York Times, Downbeat, JazzTimes, Billboard, JazzIz, and others.
