Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on November 18, 1946, Bennie Lee Wallace took up the tenor saxophone at age 12. He worked after hours clubs around Tennessee during his high school and college years and graduated on clarinet from the University of Tennessee in 1968. Three years later he moved to New York where he played concerts and club gigs with musicians like Barry Harris, Cecil McBee, Buddy Rich, Monty Alexander, Glen Moore and others. In 1979, Bennie Wallace burst onto the international Jazz scene with his award-winning first release on Enja Records, The Fourteen Bar Blues. The critical acclaim was overwhelming, hailing Bennie Wallace as the "New Saxophone Giant", the youngest of a lineage including Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Albert Ayler and Sonny Rollins

Charlie Ventura

Born: December 2, 1916

Tenor man Charlie Ventura was was a prominent fixture on the jazz scene during his era. Born Charles Venturo he was one of thirteen children from a musical family who went on to become a jazz legend, and was named "Number One Tenor Saxophonist" by Down Beat Magazine in 1945. In the summer of 1942, Charlie got a call at his day job at the Philadelphia Navy yard to join Gene Krupa's band. Unwilling to relinquish the security of a paycheck, he turned them down. Then came the second phone call and before long, Charlie was on the road with the band becoming a featured soloist, along with trumpet star, Roy Eldridge and singer Anita O'Day

Stanley William Turrentine was one of the most distinctive tenor saxophonists in jazz. Known for his big, warm, sound, "The Sugar Man" or the original "Mr. T" found inspiration in the blues and turned it into a hugely successful career with a #1 hit and four Grammy nominations — first in R&B and then in jazz. Born on April 5, 1934 in Pittsburgh, a city that has produced more than its share of jazz masters, Turrentine hailed from a musical family. Frank Tiberi, a reed section all-star since 1969 and leader since 1987. Frank Tiberi studied clarinet at age 8; started playing professionally at 13; toured with Bob Chester, Benny Goodman, Urbie Green, played with Dizzy Gillespie, self taught on flute, (somewhere in between studied bassoon with the renowned Sol Schoenbach of the Philadelphia Orchestra) played as a doubler in many Broadway musical shows before settling into the illustrious "Four Brothers" sound (three tenors and baritone) reed section of the Woody Herman Band in 1969 where, he became a featured soloist, section leader, arranger, music director and ultimately leader of the Herman Band in 1987

Samuel Carthorne Rivers (born September 25, 1923, El Reno, Oklahoma) is a jazz musician and composer. He performs on soprano and tenor saxophones, bass clarinet, flute, and piano. Rivers was previously thought to have been born in 1930. Rivers's father was a gospel musician who had sung with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Silverstone Quartet, exposing Rivers to music from an early age. Rivers moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, where he studied at the Boston Conservatory with Alan Hovhaness. He performed with Quincy Jones, Herb Pomeroy, Tadd Dameron and others. In 1959 Rivers began performing with 13-year-old drummer Tony Williams, who later went on to have an impressive career

Dewey Redman - tenor saxophone (1931 - 2006) Texas-born jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman crossed the United States as a freelance musician during the early-to-mid 1960s before finding success within New York City's avant-garde jazz community. This success was founded by his membership in the Ornette Coleman Quartet, a group he was a part of from 1967-74. A child of the Depression era, Redman might have stayed the safe and secure course of his early career as an educator in his native Forth Worth, but he chose instead to seek his fortune in the jazz clubs of Manhattan. Paul Quinichette

Many men tried, but Paul Quinichette was the most successful at emulating the style of Lester Young. (Young called him "Lady Q", a term not exactly meant at as a compliment.) With a nice smoky tone, Quinichette worked with many great musicians, and played on some of the earliest tribute albums. If he is somewhat forgotten today, it may because the tenor style he followed is currently out of favor. That fact does not lessen his music, some of which is remarkable.
