Morris Nelms

Born: October 1, 1956

Morris Nelms, pianist/vocalist, grew up in Frederick, OK, discovered Jazz at Cameron University in Lawton, OK, and was instantly hooked. He completed a Bachelor's degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1978 and a Master's degree in Composition at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX in 2000. Currently, he teaches at Texas State University. He has taught and played Jazz for many years. In addition, he has taught and, in some cases, is teaching: Introduction to the Fine Arts, Aural Learning, Improvisation/Combo performance, Big Band Performance, Jazz History, Jazz Appreciation, Jazz Piano, Jazz Guitar, Jazz Voice and University Seminar. He hopes you will buy the CD he recorded in 1999 with Cullen Offer, The Best Thing For You Would Be The Cullen Offer Quartet, on Progressive Records (PCD 7114). He can also be heard to good advantage on Ken Slavin's latest CD I'll Take Romance. Noel, the latest CD by the band Small World, is his most recent studio recording. Adam Carrillo

Born: April 16, 1989

Adam Carrillo was born in San Antonio, Texas to musical parents and honed his jazz chops in the curriculum of the highly revered Texas Music Education Association system. Under the direction of Mr. Roland Sandoval of O'Connor High School in Helotes, TX, Adam was selected to the Texas All State Jazz Band his sophomore, junior, and senior year. In 2007 Adam was selected by audition to the Yamaha Jazz Band of America where he performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra alongside the top high school jazz musicians in the country. Adam was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music where he studied jazz performance and saxophone

Adrian Ruiz

Born: January 31, 1972

Dr. Adrian Ruiz serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Courses taught at UTSA include: Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, History and Styles of Jazz, and Private Jazz Improvisation. Dr. Ruiz is active as a freelance trumpeter, performing regularly throughout the state of Texas. He has performed internationally at the Montreux, North Sea, and Taichung Jazz Festivals. I have graduate to professional equipment, but the control I exercise over the works remains the same. I spend my time creating, composing and sharing the music that you can slide into. Jazz Protagonists

The Protagonists have been making music together since 1990. They've been hailed by music critics, audiences, children, and drunks alike as a band without equal in San Antonio. Their specialty is classic jazz in the tradition of Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson. No fancy noisemakers, no electronic gimmicks -- just great improvisational music. The San Antonio Express-News has called them "classy and classic," "irrepressible," and "top-flight," and says that in "the world of the Jazz Protagonists. . . the music is hot and cool, . . . art and fun coexist." Hal Smith

Born: July 30, 1953

Hal Smith took up drumming in 1963. He listened to classic jazz drummers such as Ben Pollack, Nick Fatool, Wayne Jones, and Fred Higuera in person and later took lessons from Jake Hanna. Hal has also been inspired by the recordings of Dave Tough, Big Sid Catlett, Zutty Singleton, Jo Jones, Vic Berton, Andrew Hillaire, Ray Bauduc, Gene Krupa, George Wettling, Kaiser Marshall, Stan King, Harry Dial, Minor Hall, Wally Bishop and many others. He claims "Chicago Style Jazz" as his favorite type of music, but also enjoys listening to and playing "New Orleans," "New York" and "Kansas City" styles. Noah Peterson

Born: October 2, 1971

Noah Peterson is a delightful and emotional saxophonist. His recordings have been broadcastacross the globe and he tours throughout the United States at nightclubs, festivals, schools,community events, private concerts, hospitals, and more. Noah has a stellar reputation as ahard-working, hard-playing musician. He’s been a section leader, sideman, band leader, composer,arranger, producer and business manager for Blues, Funk, Rock, Folk, Gospel, Avant-garde,West African Marimba/mbira, Reggae, Pop, Jazz, zydeco, easy listening, and jam bands.

Noah grew up in Billings, MT as the youngest of four and son of a band director. All of the familyplayed musical instruments although there was never much of an emphasis put on music asanything other than a hobby. Noah's dad had a reputation for having "A bible in one-hand and ashotgun in the other." All of the kids grew up strong. A lot of that was probably due to the roughand tumble attitude of Noah and his brothers and their ability to take their lumps when it cametheir time. Suffice to say country roots are the best roots.

Loretta Cormier

Born: December 16

I sing jazz/pop standards with a style reminiscent of the big band singers of the '40s. My extensive repertoire includes popular standards as well as unfamiliar gems of the 1920s to 1950s. My vocal quality is distinctive and catches the listener's attention on the first notes. With flawless enunciation, impeccable phrasing, and a warm, natural delivery, I focus on interpreting the lyrics to tell a story. Two self-produced CDs, "Sing! Went the Strings of My Heart" and "Under A Blanket of Blue" have had excellent reviews and have been aired on several US radio stations, as well as in foreign countries

Barry Brake

Born: May 15, 1967

Pianist Barry Brake began playing at San Antonio's historic Gunter Hotel as a high-school student, before earning a Composition degree from Baylor University, and a Master's in English literature from UTSA.
He is now a free-lance composer, arranger, and performer of music, with numerous film soundtracks, stage shows, commercials, and CDs to his name. The San Antonio Current has described him as a "respected pianist- composer" whose music "captivates us all."
His clients include Taco Bell, Sea World, Turner Broadcasting, and the Wall Street Journal. In 2007 he produced the album "I'll Take Romance," for singer Ken Slavin, who was named Best Musician of 2006 and Best Vocalist of 2007 by the Current Music Poll.
His most recent projects include: the Sacred Harp Suite, a classical suite for piano; and "Epiphany: 50 Days, 50 Songs," a musical celebration of Epiphany in various musical styles ranging from classical to jazz to electronica, country, rock, and pop.
Additionally, Barry has been a member of the Jazz Protagonists, one of San Antonio's premier jazz groups, since its formation in 1990

Ken Slavin

Born: August 27, 1961

JAZZ CROONER EXTRAORDINAIRE! Born in New London, Connecticut, USA, in 1961, jazz and cabaret crooner Ken Slavin grew up a military brat, attending 10 schools in seven states by the time he was 17. After graduating from high school in Alaska, he settled in his father's hometown of San Antonio, Texas, where he enrolled at St. Mary's University, one of the most respected liberal arts institutions in the Southwest, graduating with honors in 1983. Despite being naturally drawn to the stage and deeply in love with all kinds of music, Ken put his show business aspirations on hold for several years while he pursued a successful journalism and public relations career
