Michael Dease: City Life: Music of Gregg Hill

by Dan McClenaghan
Jazz trios featuring a horn, bass and drums get right to the core of musical expression. With, most commonly, a saxophone--see Sonny Rollins' blueprint for the horn and trio setting, the 1957 Contemporary Records album Way Out West--the music flows freely. The players do not need to chase chords around. The result is a stretching of ...
Alon Farber: Dreams I Dream

by Jack Bowers
Israeli-born, Berklee-educated saxophonist Alon Farber leads his able-bodied quartet, Hagiga, through its paces on Dreams I Dream, the ensemble's third recording for Origin Records and fifth overall since its inception in 2001. Even though Farber's name is on the marquee and his imprint is on every number, this is a group enterprise in ...

Milan Verbist

Born:
At an early age, Milan was introduced to jazz music through his parents. As early as the age of five, Milan started playing the accordion. Around the age of seven, he made the switch to the instrument still closest to his heart, the piano. He studied at the MaGo Academy with classical pianists Arthur Vuye and Nicolas Callot. In 2016, he decided to study at De! Kunsthumaniora in Antwerp to continue his secondary studies, with Jazz Piano as his main instrument. Ewout Pierreux became his teacher for two years. During his time at this school, he started playing in a band and began giving concerts. After graduating from De! Kunsthumaniora, he was admitted to the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp with Erik Vermeulen as principal study teacher. During his time at the conservatory, he had the opportunity to take lessons and masterclasses and play with many prominent Belgian and international jazz musicians. In June 2022, he graduated from the conservatoire with highest distinction.

Michael Waldrop: Native Son

by Bill Milkowski
Following two successful big band projects--the swinging and swaggering Time Within Itself and Origin Suite--drummer-composer-bandleader Michael Waldrop has brought things down to a more intimate level on Native Son. In some ways a return to his first album as a leader, 2002's Triangularity, a sterling piano trio outing which he reissued in 2019, Native ...

Jordan VanHemert: Survival of the Fittest

by Jack Bowers
Although the title of saxophonist Jordan VanHemert's fifth album, Survival of the Fittest, may elicit images of a crash course in self-defense, that is not at all what he had in mind. The music is thematic, he says, and represents the twin lodestars of adversity and resilience. Even that, however, becomes largely irrelevant once VanHemert and ...
