Matthieu Marthouret

Born:
This musician, passionate about art in all its guises, an inspired and generous composer, dedicates much of his time to studying the language and the history of music in general, from classical to rock, to folk and more... These musical styles have always been part of his life and he considers them closely tied to each other. Along with his role as lead musician, he regularly plays with many different musicians, accompanying them at the organ or piano, for both regular and one-off sessions. Together, they play both original repertoires and cover versions, the keywords being "exchange" and "openness". He is without a shadow of a doubt one of the instrumentalists, composers and leader to keep an eye on in the future... Matthieu, a pianist, organ player and composer, was born in Grenoble in the French Alps, in the same year as the release of The Wall and Off the Wall, two albums that have left their mark on the history of music. His musical journey started in the Rhone-Alpes region at the beginning of the 21st century, later taking him to Lyon, New York and finally Paris, where he currently resides. He set up his first quartet with his older brother Guillaume, saxophonist, inspired by hard-bop and the Blue Note Records of the 60s, and quickly started playing with some of the best musicians of the region. At the same time, he studied for three years at the Chambéry conservatory, and graduated from there in 2001. He moved to Lyon in 2000 and created the group Talkin'About recording two albums with them: Reg (2001) and Connections (2005)

The Vipers
Born:
Singer and jazz organist Adrienne Hindmarsh is a truly unique talent on today’s music scene. With today’s musicians learning jazz within the classroom, it has become an exception rather than the rule for a musician develop and learn “on the road”, playing clubs and festivals and touring. Born in New Zealand into a musical family, Adrienne acquired her first organ in 2003 when she imported a Hammond C3 from Canada and with no jazz organ players in her country she taught herself to play by copying recordings by Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Groove Holmes and Jack McDuff. After performed clubs and festivals throughout New Zealand and Australia, Adrienne moved to the USA in 2009

Rob Whitlock
Born:
ROB WHITLOCK In basketball, Rob Whitlock would be known as “the sixth man,” the first player to come off the bench and the one expected to sink key baskets during crunch time. In baseball, he’d be “the utility player” who can play almost any position in the field day-after-day and can be counted on to connect when up at the plate. In the world of acting, Whitlock would be described as a “character actor,” someone who delivers a memorable and pivotal performance while occasionally stealing scenes from marquee stars. Now, through a two- part series of musical sketches that incorporate a variety of genres, the keyboardist- producer-composer proves that he is indeed ready for his close-up

Larry Young

Born:
A true innovator on the Hammond B3, Young took a different musical path than any of the other organ masters of his time: Although he started out drawing his major influences from the work of Jimmy Smith and the gospel and blues elements that other players employed, but eventually turned to a more complex, modal approach to the organ with sophisticated harmonic and chordal structure Larry Young was born on October 7, 1940, and hails from Newark, New Jersey. His background includes study of both classical and jazz music on the piano, but had a natural family bond with the organ. Reuben Wilson

Born:
In the late 60s, organist Reuben Wilson began ascending to his current status as a "godfather" of acid-jazz with "On Broadway", the first in a string of albums for Blue Note Records. With these recordings Wilson revealed a command of funk that helped redefine the soul jazz movement created by the likes of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff and Richard "Groove" Holmes. "l was impressed by the great players," Wilson said in an interview with Carlo Wolff for The Plain Dealer, But I thought the music could be well served by a pop feeling, I liked what drummers Bernard Purdie and ldris Muhammad were doing [Wilson has recorded with both drummers]

Baby Face Willette

Born:
There is an air of mystique, an alluring attraction in jazz circles, to those highly talented musicians who shone brilliantly for a short duration, then slipped into obscurity. Jazz organist Baby Face Willette is certainly one of those figures. Roosevelt Willette, born on September 11, 1933, was the son of a minister who was introduced to the organ, as many others, in church, an influence which would define his style and direction. In the early 50’s he played with various gospel and R&B groups, and reportedly put out a couple of singles around this time. He worked his way to Chicago in the late ‘50’s and eventually went to New York and got involved with the jazz scene there

Winston Walls
Born:
Winston Walls - Hammond organ (1943 - 2008) "There's a lot of cats who can play, but everybody's not special. I'm special-I'm a bad dude." Having somehow managed a 30 year career behind folks like the Pointer Sisters, Lou Donaldson and Sonny Stitt without a single recording of his own until his “Boss of the B3,” in 1993, Winston Walls was certainly one bad dude when it comes to Hammond players. He was born in a car in Ironton, Ohio, in 1943, as his family was en route from Lexington, Ky., to their Charleston home. Music was a family affair. His father, Harry "Van" Walls served as house pianist for Atlantic Records during the 1950s and was recognized by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation with a Pioneer Award in 1997. After studying drums with the late, great Charleston drummer Frank Thompson, Winston got a lucky break when Hammond great Bill Doggett's drummer didn't show for a gig at Charleston's Municipal Auditorium

Trudy Pitts

Born:
Trudy Pitts with husband Mr. C at the Meiji-En Restaurant A dream gig might be this: three nights each week in a restaurant noted for its warmth, intimacy, musical freedom, and complete support for the artist. Sounds almost too good to be true, right? Well, in the City of Brotherly Love, the Meiji-En (thought to be the nation's biggest Japanese restaurant) offered such a piano trio gig to two of my favorite musicians, Trudy Pitts and Mr. C, and for the last five years it has seemed like a dream. I've been calling Trudy and Mr. C Philadelphia's best- kept secret, but the truth is that most people in the know have been hip to Trudy's piano and organ work and Mr. C's drumming and promoting for years. Trudy is a native Philadelphian who began playing piano at age six
