Albert Marcoeur

Born:
Born on the 12th of December 1947, in Dijon (Cote-d'Or)
1958 to 1966: Studied clarinet at the National Music and Drama School of Dijon (teacher: Roger Desoomer)
“I'm glad I did it. I must have learnt a thing or two…"
1963: "First band, first gig. The clarinet on the rack of the push bike, I pedalled with my knees wide apart, to avoid getting grease on the bottom of my suit pants. And flower pots around the stage."
1965: "Numerous contests were organised in the area. Rock bands would compete and the best one won… oh, something like 150 euros in today's money. Each band played two pieces. Equipment changes between two bands had to be done in a matter of minutes. There was no sound system facing the audience. The voice and saxophone microphones were plugged into the guitar amplifiers. What took longest were the drums: a snare drum, a cymbal, a bass drum and two nails, but it was fast enough. Sometimes we couldn't drive the nails in, if the stage was concrete or sloping. All the bands knew each other, spied on each other, were aware of their own worth. We knew that the guitarist of the Bristol's Boys had joined the Crews. We also knew that, if the Cherokees were at the next contest in Chalon-sur-Sa'ne, we'd be defeated yet again!"

Mario Rechtern

Born:
Born in Berlin 1942, he began playing the saxophone as a teenager. At that time he claims he had a lot of sounds to penetrate and questions to ask. While officially playing clarinet and violin he had to hide his first saxophone from his parents. Regarding clarinet Mr. Rechtern says, “it was nice of them to concede to that reed but I had to practice saxophone in the forests at night, yet at 28 I was playing in jazz bands that were very quickly ended by police intervention - of course because of loudness, but all musicians agreed - that was not the reason - there was something else". Throughout his career he has shown a deep interest in philosophical and historical texts and as with most artists this has influenced his views on art and its politics

The Recliners

The Recliners, hailing from Austin, TX and now also based in Richmond, VA take the traditional "lounge sound" and zoom-off into galaxies never explored by Sinatra, Jones, or even Humperdinck. In over 15 plus years of existence, The Recliners have entertained them all: young and old, tuxedo-ed or tongue-pierced, in taffeta or tattooed, debutantes and dirt-bikers. A Recliner's Recipe: Take traditional standards from the 20's to the 60's, add in newer songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's, swing them across the dance floor, then mix in a generous shot of sultry bossa nova and cha-cha rhythms, blend until smoother than a James Bond come-on line, add tasty original songs (shaken...not stirred) and you're in martini heaven, baby.

1.What brought you to music?
I always loved music.Jazz especially, but many kinds ofmusic. Its hard to describe why. It was just always there..itsstill like that!
I heard Jazz everyday in the house..that's not too uniquebecause lots of young black children grew up around Jazz, butmaybe they didn't like it for themselves even though they knowabout it.
2. Describe your role models, muses and mentors.
Hmmm...one good model for me was/is John Coltrane. Heovercame certain personal issues and because he devoted somuch time to the music he was able to make a living fromit...and playing some very creative music as you knowalready!Politically some of my role models are Malcolm X and AmiriBaraka..they had/have the ability to move forward andrecognize that Things Have Got To Change.
