Matt Clark

Born:
Matt Clark is a guitarist/composer from Brighton, England. His career has spanned 35 years, encompassing genres as broad as jazz and blues, alternative, experimental and electronic music. The past year of COVID and lockdown has been both testing and inspiring. Lack of live music and in-person collaboration has meant re-thinking musical output. Matt is currently working under the moniker Matt Clark Three: “Jazz influenced grooves. Mostly instrumental. Combining a love of lo-fi loops and samples, avant-garde jazz and influenced by the contemporary jazz scenes of New York and Chicago…” Originally conceived as a solo project, Matt is about to release a new album “One From Brooklyn” which, whilst primarily a solo effort, also includes collaborations with bassist Mark Wilson (Caaw, Underhound) and drummer Darren Beckett (Madeleine Peyroux, Lauren Hill) “The overall effect creates a dynamic sonic quality, as if a laid-back street-level musical trio were performing their own structured and improvised material but also incorporating the ephemeral swell of sounds around them…” - Jordan Penney on AllAboutJazz.com Matt began by playing bass guitar in school band Southern Tongue Business in the late 1980s, and played in various bands during his teens in and around the Midlands

Steve Heckman & Matt Clark: Some Other Time/Slow Café

by Dan Bilawsky
Back in the summer of 2004, saxophonist Steve Heckman and pianist Matt Clark took to the studio to lay down some duo tracks. Those recordings have now finally found their way into the world through Some Other Time/Slow Café, an album presenting a dozen pieces that speak with casual and reflective charm while highlighting the rapport ...
Michael Zilber: Originals For the Originals

by Paul Rauch
Saxophonist/composer Michael Zilber is better known by fellow musicians than by the jazz public, this is an unfortunate truth. The Vancouver, B.C., native moved to Boston in his late teens, then to New York City to begin his musical odyssey. Musicians there recognized his prodigious talent, resulting in recordings with jazz royalty such as Dizzy Gillespie, ...

Steve Heckman Quintet: Search for Peace

by Dan Bilawsky
Saxophonist Steve Heckman's Search For Peace serves as something of a companion piece to his previous album--Born To Be Blue (Jazzed Media, 2013). Both albums feature the same band, present (mostly) familiar material, and walk pleasingly straightforward paths. So what's different? Well, for starters, Matt Clark played piano on Heckman's last date, but he's taken to ...
Steve Heckman Quintet: Search for Peace

by C. Michael Bailey
Steve Heckman is a meat 'n potatoes saxophonist whose previous recording, Born to be Blue (Jazzed Media, 2013) was a trip through the heart of the jazz mainstream, circa 1960 (with better sonics). Heckman follows Born to be Blue with a right turn into hard bop atop of an organ-guitar quartet. For the ...
Steve Heckman Quintet: Search for Peace

by Jack Bowers
Steve Heckman says he was inspired to play the tenor saxophone after hearing John Coltrane, especially Coltrane's A Love Supreme. Luckily, Heckman did not follow his mentor completely off the deep end but remained instead true to his bop-bred roots while developing a singular voice of his own on the tenor. On Search for Peace (a ...
