Kingsley Durant

You could say that music is in Kingsley Durant’s blood. He is the oldest of five brothers, and four of them play music. In fact, his entire family on his mother’s side is musical. Durant hails from a clan that boasts violinists, pianists, classical singers, organists, horn players, and guitarists in its ranks.
Durant demonstrated both an aptitude and an appetite for music when he was young. He began playing when he was eight years old, learning piano, trumpet, and French horn as well as guitar. He performed in concert bands and choirs and studied music theory and composition in high school and college. The classical musicians in his family were important influences in his musical development, as was his uncle, Peter Gammons. He shared with Durant his comprehensive mid-1960s record collection, which included artists like Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and the Yardbirds. This led to a fascination with the sound and feel of guitars and rock and roll music that has never abated.

Melvin Johnson

Born:
Houston-born keyboardist/composer Melvin Johnson is an artist as adept at creating his own dynamic expressions as he is a most valuable team player in realizing the visions of others. Church-grounded and college-educated, he has trained himself thoroughly to be an all-around musician who doesn’t just play his instrument but understands the fundamentals of all that he plays and composes, as well as his role as the leader of his band. At 36 years old, Melvin recently released his debut album, Little Red Wagon, a conceptual piece inspired by wisdoms passed down to him from his adopted father, Robert Lloyd Parker, as well as his own musings on life, family and spirituality. Musically, the project covers the full spectrum of African American musical styles, presented in configurations of solo, duo, trio, quartet and quintet. Melvin states, “These first fully arranged instrumental songs do not belong in any genre box, be it Jazz, Classical, Choral, Gospel, etc. All of that and more is in this! I love the space of creating at will.”

Jeff Beck

Born:
Jeff Beck isn't your typical guitar legend. His goal, in fact, is to make you forget that he plays guitar.
"I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound," says Beck."Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off. I love it when people hear my music but can't figure out what instrument I'm playing. What a cool compliment."
Beck burst onto the music scene in 1966 after joining the Yardbirds. Although his stint with the band lasted only 18 months, Beck played on almost all of the group's hits. More importantly, Beck's innovative style heard on classics like "Heart Full of Soul" and "Shapes of Things" helped influence the psychedelic sound of the "60s.
