Bob Leto

Born:

"Bob Leto, heard for the first time on record in Burn'in the Blues (CAP 2000), is a jazz drummer's drummer. Bob's fastidious, provocative drumming is a cornucopia of jazz styles," says Proctor Lippincott of the New York Times. "Mixing the old and the new is the direction he paves on his debut record, Burn'in The Blues." Burn'in the Blues is a collaboration with guitarist John Abercrombie, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring and Hammond B-3 player Jeff Palmer. My first exposure to standards came when my parents took me to Broadway musicals. Buddy Rich was also a beginning influence, along with Max Roach and Joe Morello. When I was 18, I won a National Endowment for the Arts award to study with percussion masters Joe Morello and Tony Williams

Bill Bruford

Born:

Bill Bruford grew up with jazz. As an amateur drummer in the 1960s, and after a handful of lessons from Lou Pocock of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he began his professional career in 1968. He was a guiding light in the so-called British "Art Rock" movement, touring internationally with Yes and King Crimson from 1968-74. There then followed several years spent observing and participating in the music making processes of, among others, Gong, National Health, Genesis and U.K., until Bill felt ready to write and perform his own music with his own band Bruford, recording four albums from 1977-80. It was, however, the reconstituted King Crimson of 1980-84 that provided the vehicle for his revolutionary use of electronics in developing the melodic side of percussion

Adrian Peek

Born:

By: Isaac “Zeke” Bibby photos ©2004 Jack Mader It’s a very dark and cold January night. Minus 30 degrees outside, windchill about minus 45. But inside The Dakota, Minneapolis’ premier jazz club, the crowded floor and balconies feel like July in Jamaica. The palpable heat radiates from the excellent group onstage. The Walter Chancellor Quartet featuring Thomasina Petrius is clearly one of those groups deserving wider recognition. Utterly amazing vocals, blazing saxes, angular piano and rumbling bass permeate the room. At the center of this brilliant music, stoking this modern jazz blast furnace, is drummer Adrian Peek. This writer has been acquainted with Adrian Peek for a number of years
