Zach Owens
Mr. Owens' percussion instruction and performance experience spans more than 15 years. Born in Newburgh, New York, he attended Butler University and New Mexico his instructors have included Gordon Stout, Thom Hannum Cadets of Bergen County, Tim Adams, keith aleo, beth raddock, Neil Rutland and Craig Hetrick also Master Classes and performances with Keiko Abe and Evelyn Glennie, Bobatunde Altunji; he is also an alumni of the Interlochen School of the Arts in Michigan. He’s performed with jazz greats Winton Marsalis, Joshua Redmon, Bob Mintzer an others. He’s an avid percussionist and Vic Firth sponsored Marching Percussion Specialist and USSBA Adjudicator

Dan Weiss
Shifting Foundation grantee Dan Weiss has been hailed as one of the top five jazz drummers in The New York Times, and his large ensemble recording "Fourteen" made the top ten list of their best recordings of 2014. Weiss’s innovative drumming and forward thinking compositions have been pushing musical limits for years. With his piano trio, he’s released two recordings entitled, "Now Yes When" (2006) and "Timshel" (2011), which have been critically acclaimed for their unique approach to song structure and endless creative improvisation. Buru Style is a half-Connecticut/half-Boston based Live Dub group that meditates on ultra-ethereal riddims from the catalogues of Jamaican Nyabingi artists such as Count Ossie and Cedric Brooks, mixes in newer tracks from the likes of Jah Cure and Richie Spice and plays a whole heap of original music as well. In concert, the nyabingi heartbeat pervades; no matter how dense or sparse the melodies and soundscapes in the upper textures become the rhythm section pulses on. The term “Buru” is taken from a Jamaican music and masquerade tradition. Certain elements of Buru music provided the foundational rhythms for Nyabingi, the traditional drumming of Rastafari

Harris Eisenstadt
Brooklyn-based drummer and composer Harris Eisenstadt (b. Toronto, 1975) is known for his “deep-sighted and elastic view of improvised music in settings that are both small-scale and expansive.” (The New Yorker) His resume includes studies with some of the most respected names in jazz and improvised music, West African and Afro-Cuban drumming, and performance credits in jazz, film, theater, poetry, dance, contemporary concert music and opera. Eisenstadt has performed all over the globe, received grants from organizations such as Meet The Composer, The Durfee Fondation, American Composers Forum, Canada Council for the Arts, and appeared on more than 60 recordings since 2000, including more than twenty as a leader

Bryson Kern
Bryson Kern is emerging as a unique voice on the drum set, gaining prominence and notoriety for his sensitive, yet creative approach to the instrument. Bryson has performed with such jazz notables as Fred Hersch, Benny Golson, Terell Stafford, Joel Frahm, Ingrid Jensen, Michael Weiss, Melvin Rhyne, and Nneenna Freelon. Bryson attended the Indiana University School of Music, studying with teachers David Baker and Steve Houghton. After receiving a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in the spring of 2004, Bryson relocated to New York City, where he continues to reside. He is a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop/New York Jazz Orchestra and can be seen as both a leader and sideman playing throughout the city.

My earliest musical performance experiences were in school bands and choirs and Christmas Caroling with my church. I began playing and studying drums in the fifth grade. In the 8th grade I was a featured soloist in a summer Big Band class. I continued and was a featured solo performer in a summer high school Big Band class while still in the eighth grade. In high school I played in every performance ensemble available to me. I continued my musical studies at Cabrillo College and took private lessons with George Marsh in San Francisco. Kris began playing drums at age 6. Influenced by his father Gus Gustofson who was a professional Jazz drummer and worked for Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Brew Moore, Harry James and Bobby Darin ( Played drums on "Mack The Knife" and " Beyond the Sea") Kris played in all the school bands and gained experience at school concerts. His first paying job was when he was 14 years old.
