Marion Hayden

HONOR THE TRADITION, EXPAND THE LEGACY

Born in Detroit, MI, a crucible of jazz, Marion Hayden is one of the nation’s finest proponents of the acoustic bass. Mentored by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Hayden began performing jazz at the age of 15. She has performed with such diverse luminaries as Bobby McFerrin, Nancy Wilson, Geri Allen, Regina Carter, Steve Turre, Lester Bowie, David Allen Grier, James Carter, Dorothy Donegan, Joe Williams, Lionel Hampton, Frank Morgan, Jon Hendricks, Hank Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Larry Willis, Vanessa Rubin, Sheila Jordan, Mulgrew Miller, Annie Ross and many others. She is a co-founder of the touring jazz ensemble Straight Ahead- the first all woman jazz ensemble signed to Atlantic Records. She is a member of the Detroit International Jazz Festival All-Star Ambassadors touring ensemble.

Sencalar Glassman Quintet

The Sencalar/Glassman Quintet is comprised of co-leaders Altin Sencalar and ChrisGlassman. The two trombonists met during their graduate degree course work at Michigan StateUniversity. The Sencalar/Glassman Quintet has performed at Moriarty’s Pub and Grill as guestartists for “Jazz Tuesday’s,” Soggy Bottom bar as a part of their weekly jazz night, the Lansing JazzFestival in 2018, their “Welcome Home” educational tour where they performed and taught studentsjazz at all East Lansing elementary schools. The tour was based on the Detroit jazz scene’s mantra"each one ,teach one.” This tour was generously sponsored by the East Lansing Cultural Arts GrantFY19 and Michigan State Universities Running Start Grant, and Michigan State University JazzStudies program. The Quintet has also appeared at the 2019 Detroit Jazz Festival as a part of the"Hometown Hero Series," The University of North Texas as guest artist, Ohio State University asguests artist, and the 2020 Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival Paul Carr’s Discovery act winners. They willalso be 2020 American Trombone Workshop as guest artists and are recently named the 2020 "Artists in Residence" for Jazz Institute at Brevard.

Yao/Smith/Hughes Sextet

The Yao Smith Hughes Sextet brings a fresh, new set of original compositions following in the footsteps of the straight-ahead jazz tradition of Detroit. Hard-bopping melodies, tight 3-horn arrangements, colorful voicings, driving swing feel and soulful grooves are all trademarks of The Gates. Detroit trumpeter Jimmy Smith and saxophonist James Hughes are joined by New York trombonist, composer and arranger John Yao forming a co-lead ensemble. Besides being fresh and intriguing improvisers, all three are band leaders and formidable composers in their own right with ample portfolios. The collaboration between the three musicians started at a session in New York City a few years earlier where each one brought a few tunes to play

Ammy Amorette

My name is Ammy. I am a Chilean musician from the Metropolis of Santiago de Chile. I have traded my urban existance for something much slower. I currently reside in rural Michigan. A stonethrow away from Lake Huron, close yet farther away from gigs in metro Detroit. On the Farm, my companion in Arts, my husband Joshua shares my love for music. My passion is Jazz, Bossa Nova, Boleros, Pop y experimental music such Latin Jazz Fusion. My personal quest is to progress as an individual, musician and as a composer. I have recorded two studio albums of my own compositions in Chile through generous suport of the Chilean Goverment's FONDART program

Sky Covington

Born: April 6, 1971

Sky Covington was the winner of the "Outstanding Jazz Vocalist" honor at the 2016 Detroit Music Awards. It is her 6th music award in the past 4 years. Sky's Jazzy sound takes audiences on an intriguing musical journey that provides fascination for the ears. Sky began her career performing in glee clubs from elementary to junior high school. Her music training came from noted saxophonist, Scott Reiter, and from Harold Bowles, who was a session musician for Motown. She also received private drama training. Sky was born in Detroit but relocated to Atlanta at the age of 16. While there she gazed upon the star lit sky overhead and was so inspired by it that she made a bold decision to drop her birth name, Nicole, in favor of “Sky” to symbolize her life philosophy: “No Limits”

The James Hughes - Jimmy Smith Quintet

The HSQ is a Detroit-based jazz quintet that performs original music with purpose. The group is spearheaded by Saxophonist James Hughes & trumpeter Jimmy Smith, the group features the rhythm section of Phil Kelly, Takashi Iio and Nate Winn. The quintet formed in the autumn of 2012 with the purpose of promoting their brand of Detroit be- bop. Fresh tunes, tight ensemble work, intriguing solos and music that swings are among the groups trademarks. Ray McKinney

Born: March 28, 1931

The great tenor saxophonist Lester “Pres” Young preferred bassists who, in his words, played plenty of “deep sea divers.” Deep sea divers are low notes, bottom notes, notes with meaty, deep, resonant tones. Pres wanted the bass to anchor the rhythm section, not play on top of it. Ray McKinney’s playing fitted firmly within Pres’ philosophy, for McKinney was a strong section man with a lot of bottom to his sound. Don Was

Born: September 13, 1952

Was was born in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Oak Park High School in the Detroit suburb of Oak Park, then attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor but dropped out after the first year. A journeyman musician, he grew up listening to the Detroit blues sound and the jazz music of John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Using the stage name "Don Was", he formed the group Was (Not Was) with school friend David Weiss (David Was). The group found commercial success in the 1980s—releasing four albums and logging several hit records. A jazz/R&B album of Hank Williams covers, "Forever's A Long, Long Time" was released in 1997, under the name Orquestra Was

Dave Sharp

Dave Sharp was born in Detroit, Michigan where he was inspired by the city’s rich musical heritage. While earning a degree from the University of Michigan, Sharp became deeply devoted to the study of jazz and improvisation. This led to a move to San Francisco, where Dave studied with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis (McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderly, Les McCann) at the New College of California. While living in San Francisco, Sharp performed in art spaces and venues like Cafe Du Nord and the Fillmore, and served as bassist and composer for the modern jazz ensemble the Spheres of Influence
