Community of the Spirit

Titled after one of Rumi's most known poems, Community of the Spirit (COS) seeks to fulfill deep, honest expression through the original compositions, the personal interpretations of the material, and the art of improvisation. Crossing jazz and classical boundaries, combining strings and flute with vocalist and rhythm section, and setting new and original music to poetry, Community of the Spirit is an alternative choice amongst a mainstream music scene. COS has performed at venues such as the 5C Cafe, Puppets Jazz Bar, and The Shrine, and its members have won awards such as the Zurich Jazz Orchestra Composer Competition and Honorable Mention in the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards. JOHN KING, composer, guitarist and violist, has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet; Red {an orchestra}, Ethel; the Albany Symphony/”Dogs of Desire”, Bang On A Can All-Stars; Mannheim Ballet; New York City Ballet/Diamond Project, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballets de Monte Carlo; as well as the Merce Cunningham Dance Co. His string quartets have also been performed by the Eclipse Quartet (LA) and the Mondriaan Quartet (Amsterdam). His quartet “Crucible” has premiered many of his compositions at The Stone (June 2007) and The Kitchen (April 2009). He has written 3 operas: “Herzstück/heartpiece”, based on the text of Heiner Müller, premiered at the 1999 Warsaw Autumn Festival and presented at the Kitchen NYC in 2000; “la belle captive” based on texts by Alain Robbe-Grillet, premiered at Teatro Colon/CETC in Buenos Aires in 2003, and toured to London’s ICA (Fronteras Festival) in 2004 and The Kitchen in 2005; and also his most recent opera, “Dice Thrown”, based on the Stéphane Mallarmé poem, an excerpt of which was performed by New York City Opera as part of its VOX series in May 2008. He has 2 recent CD releases of music for string quartet; “AllSteel” (Tzadik) and “Ethel” (Cantaloupe)

Originally from Palo Alto, California, pianist and composer Jon Gold has had a life long interest in Brazilian and Latin jazz. He's performed throughout northern California, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, and throughout Rio de Janeiro. Along the way he's recorded with such artists as Airto Moreira and bassist Harvie S. Jon also has a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of California at Santa Cruz and gained noteriety as the first person to ever melt a diamond.

Dylan Rynhart

Dylan Rynhart is a composer of many genres. He founded award winning jazz orchestra Fuzzy Logic Ensemble and has made two albums of his music with them. Dylan has scored music for theatre, an award winning short film and became involved in electro-acoustic composition and surround sound through his masters in music technology from Trinity college. He has also received commissions to write for contemporary classical ensembles, including sax and string quartets. Dylan is represented by both the Contemporary music centre and the Improvised music centre, and is currently working on his PhD in music composition with composer John Godfrey, in U.C.C

Coupé Cloué

Jean Gesner Henri was born in Leogane, Haiti on May 10th 1925. Jean Gesner Henri was known as Coupé Cloué, a nick name he acquired as a result of his prowess on the soccer pitch ("coupe" means "cut", and "cloue", "nail").Inspired by Cuban bolero and son, he began to perform as a guitarist in Port-au Prince in 1951. In 1957 he formed Trio Crystal which was later renamed Trio Select. They played their own version of "twoubadou" music in the clubs and parties of Port-au-Prince. Twoubadou is a style of music based on the sounds brought back to Haiti by Haitian cane cutters who had worked in Cuba. Coupé's first band, Trio Select, championed a synthesis of jazz, Haitian mérengue and folk rhythms, and helped to popularize the use of the guitar in Haiti in the 1950s and 60s.Trio Select featured Coupé himself, a second guitarist and a maracas player
