Moppa Elliott: Jazz Band/Rock Band/Dance Band
by Jerome Wilson
Bassist Moppa Elliott is best known as the leader of the surrealistic jazz group, Mostly Other People Do The Killing, but his musical universe, encompassing work with symphony orchestras and new music ensembles, stretches much farther than that band's frantic music. This is reflected in this 2 CD set of Elliott leading three different types of ...
Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord: Harder On The Outside
by Jerome Wilson
A complex web of sampling, beat construction and live improvisation all led to this disc by guitarist Jon Lundbom and his group, Big Five Chord, a CD that is a heady stew of hard-edged funk grooves, squalling saxophones and gleeful guitar freakouts. This project started with saxophonist Bryan Murray sampling old Big Five Chord ...
Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Sirius Juju and Unspeakable Garbage at Jerry's on Front
by Geno Thackara
Mostly Other People Do the Killing/Sirius Juju/Unspeakable GarbageJerry's on FrontPhiladelphia, PAFebruary 16, 2019 Twenty blocks and a world away from the clubs and bars of Philadelphia's city center, the experimental art space of Jerry's on Front is a room one would hardly imagine for music at all. It's a nondescript one-car-garage-sized ...
Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord: Harder On The Outside
by Mark Corroto
Sometimes a single track can satisfy an album's worth of listening. You get that feeling with “People be Talking," the first song on Jon Lundbom's ninth release with his band Big Five Chord. His quintet packs everything into this kitchen sink composition. The piece is jazz-and-not-jazz, like Miles Davis affected in his transitional years between his ...

by Victor L. Schermer
Dan Monaghan is a working drummer who makes an indispensable contribution to the music by being the one who provides the swing and support that allows the other musicians to achieve their diverse objectives. He performs so often in the Philadelphia area that if you go to a jazz show, there's a fair chance he'll be ...

Jon Lundbom’s Big Five Chord: Make The Changes
by Karl Ackermann
Earlier in the year, guitarist Jon Lundbom, and his Big Five Chord quintet, began the unusual business approach of releasing a stratified set of four EPs, eventually culminating in a complete box set on Hot Cup Records. The approximately one half-hour of content on each disc was a lavish proposal from the start, giving each EP ...
Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord: Play All the Notes
by Karl Ackermann
When we last left Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord they had just released Bring Their 'A' Game, the second chapter in their four EP tetralogy. Like its predecessor, Make Magic Happen it was full of precarious diversions that went beyond well-mapped terrain. The group approaches the unfamiliar with cleverness, misdirection, and at times, a full-frontal ...
Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord: Bring Their ‘A’ Game
by Karl Ackermann
Bring Their 'A' Game is the second of guitarist Jon Lundbom's Big Five Chord, four-part series of 2016 EPs which will be offered as individual discs and as a box set. Each of the releases, on Moppa Elliott's Hot Cup Records label, runs approximately one half-hour and like the preceding entry, Make Magic Happen, the three ...
Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord: Make Magic Happen
by Karl Ackermann
Guitarist Jon Lundbom, with his Big Five Chord quintet, has developed the unusual marketing strategy of individually presenting each of a series of four EPs (at lower price points) over the course of 2016 with an option to purchase all as a box set. At approximately one half-hour each, it's a generous proposition; more so, given ...
