Eivind Opsvik
Born in Oslo, bassist and composer Eivind Opsvik was introduced to music at home. His father loved to play the saxophone and constantly spun records—everything from Ornette Coleman to Billie Holiday and The Beatles. An early memory features Eivind on drums, jamming out “A Hard Day’s Night” with his father. Later, a denim-clad rocker cousin lent him a bass guitar and the newfound ability of adding pitch to rhythm was a revelation. Opsvik spent the rest of his teens getting to know this instrument, as well as the double bass, while also experimenting with a 4-track tape recorder and pouring music into his head.

Brandon Essex
Born:
Brandon got hooked on music at an early age. He began playing loud rock music in bars and clubs at the tender age of 15. Still in his teens, Brandon flipped for the double bass and jass music, joined a quartet and landed his first steady gigs. Soon after that, he actually learned how to play, and has never looked back. Now with a voracious diet for both quarter notes and syncopation, playing music has become a self sustaining habit, with many chairs and cigarette machines agreeing that his vicious cycle of fourths is vital and addictive..............

When I was young, my Mom would buy me records as gifts, while she got other items for my sisters. I
loved those albums! When I took them to school for "Show and Tell," I would have to promise to be
very careful to not damage the album; otherwise, I would not be able to take another album to school
later. I think I can still sing the lyrics to Winnie the Pooh's "Exercise Song."
While I was still too young to start piano lessons, I would watch and listen to my older sisters
practiced for their lessons. After they finished practicing, I would go to the piano and figure out what

Born:
Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Mark showed an early interest in music when he started to play the drums at the age of 7. In his teens, his interests turned to the electric bass after attending a Parliament/Funkadelics concert and watching bassist Bootsy Collins do his thing.
At 14, Mark met several members of the Return To Forever band, including Stanley Clarke. Clarke suggested that Mark continue his electric bass studies, but also recommended that he learn to play the acoustic bass. Within a few weeks of that meeting, Mark purchased his first acoustic bass from famed St. Louis bassist Billy Houston, the uncle of Tom and Dick Smothers! Having taken his advice, Mark wrote to Stanley Clarke to inform him that he had purchased an acoustic bassAbout Whitney Moulton
