Sammy Morales / SM Quinteto

Sammy Morales was born in the Bronx on August 22, 1959. Currently, he works as the Music Director of Compañia Teatro Repertorio de la UPR' and the Taller de Música Popular at the University of Puerto Rico, and as electric bass teacher. He is also an ensemble professor and bass instructor at the Inter American University in San Juan. In Puerto Rico he has performed and recorded as a bass player with Wilkins, Danny Rivera, Lourdes Robles, Glenn Monroig, Luis Ángel, Proyecto M, René Farrait, Los Andinos, H20, Willie Colón, and others. In the jazz scene, he has played with Proyecto Evif, Ángel David Mattos, Frankie Suárez, Brenda Hopkins, Edgar Abraham, Jorge Laboy, David Sánchez (Heineken Jazz Jam, 1995), Perico Ortiz (Heineken Jazz Jam, 1995), Danilo Pérez (Heineken Jazz Jam, 1995), Amuni Nacer and many others

Dave Moss

Dave Moss, originally from The San Francisco Bay Area, is an electric and double bassist who lived in New York City for 13 years but then relocated to Kyoto, Japan in January, 2016. During his time in New York City he performed and collaborated with a host of prominent jazz artists, such as: William Parker, Charnette Moffett, Eric McPherson, Aaron Scott, Daniel Carter, Demian Richardson and Ferenc Nemeth to name a few. One of the biggest moments for Moss though, was meeting his long-time hero, Ornette Coleman. This introduction led to 8 years of deeply transformational meetings and sessions. Currently, Dave Moss has several projects he’s working on, which also include remote collaboration between New York and Kyoto, with groups such as: The Missing Ones and Platypus Revenge.

During his tenure the R&B, soul, salsa, and jazz bands of the CMP were recognized by DownBeat magazine’s Student Music Awards 15 times. The bands performed hundreds of gigs in the U.S. and abroad, held standing gigs at local clubs, performed on dozens of radio and television broadcasts, recorded at some of the most hallowed studios in the country, and performed with dozens of Grammy caliber artists. Katie Thiroux
Katie Thiroux is a bassist and vocalist of outstanding talent and determination. Coming from a musical family in Los Angeles, she was surrounded by music; beginning with violin lessons at age 4 then switching to the acoustic bass at age 8. While continuing her studies on bass, Katie explored both jazz and classical vocal styles; landing principal roles in the LA Opera and Opera Pacifica by the age of 10. Captivated by an early recording of Lionel Hampton, Katie was driven to pursue her love for jazz and began studying privately with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton at the age of 12. In 2013, Katie formed The Katie Thiroux Quartet with guitarist Graham Dechter (Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Eliane Elias, Michael Buble), saxophonist Roger Neumann (Anita O'Day, Woody Herman) and drummer Matt Witek (Larry Fuller, John Pizzarelli Quartet)

Marcos Paiva

BIO Cited by music critics as one of the top musicians of the new crop of Brazilian music, Marcos was born in Tupã, São Paulo and grew up in Viçosa, in the interior of Minas Gerais. He began studying music at the city’s conservatory and his adolescence was marked by the influence of regional music by Toninho Horta and Milton Nascimento. He taught himself to play the electric bass at 16 years of age. At 20 he moved to Rio de Janeiro where he studied at the Uni-Rio Federal University and at the Centro Ian Guest de Aperfeiçoamento Musical (Cigam), important outlets for the dissemination of popular music

Clark Sommers is a Grammy Award winning bassist steeped in the jazz tradition. Sommers, born September 7th, 1977, raised in Lake Forest, Illinois, is an artist dedicated to cultivating his own unique sound by expanding on the work of past masters while keeping an ear towards the future. Over the last 15 years Clark has performed all over the world and is featured on more than 40 albums with renowned artists such as Kurt Elling, Cedar Walton, Ernie Watts, The Mighty Blue Kings, Marilyn McCoo, Marvin Hamlisch, Kevin Mahogany, Peter Bernstein, Michael Weiss, Ira Sullivan, Frank Wess and Charles McPherson among others

James Quinlan
Music has been in James Quinlan’s blood his entire life. Learning piano and viola in grade school, James found a natural connection with the bass as soon as he saw his first upright in high school. This love has transformed into a career in music and an education at the University of Miami. There he found a wide collection of ensembles to participate in as well as courses to study from and talented friends to collaborate with. In May 2011, James graduated from the University with a BFA in Studio Music and Jazz Bass Performance from the studio of Donald Coffman and Charles Bergeron. A native of Miami, James thrives in all cultures
