Maarten Altena

Altena studied double bass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (he graduated in 1968). From 1980 on, he took composition lessons from Robert Heppener. Since 1968, he played in various music ensembles both in classical music and jazz. Besides the Nederlands Ballet Orkest, these were the jazz groups of Marion Brown, Hans Dulfer and Theo Loevendie, later on those of Willem Breuker and Burton Greene. He played in the Orkest de Volharding and the Instant Composers Pool-Tentett of Misha Mengelberg. Since the mid-1970s, he improvised with Derek Bailey, Paul Lovens and in the Vario Project of Günter Christmann, later also with Peter Kowald and in the Northern European Melody and Improvisation Orchestra of Sven-Åke Johansson

Jay Anderson

Bassist/composer Jay Anderson is among the most versatile and respected jazz artists performing today. Born in 1955 in Southern California, Anderson be gan playing acoustic bass at the age of 12. Throughout junior high, high school, and college, Anderson won numerous awards for excellence in both jazz and classical music. One week after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Performance from California State University at Long Beach, Anderson was asked to join the Woody Herman Orchestra. After touring with the “Herd” for a year, he was called by Carmen McRae and performed with the legendary singer for the next two years. In 1982 Anderson made the decision to move to New York City

Arild Andersen

He has been one of Europe's leading bass player since the early 70-ties. Andersen started out as a member of the Jan Garbarek Quartet (67-73). The group also included Terje Rypdal and Jon Christensen. During the same period he also worked with Norwegian singer Karin Krog and played in the rhythm section for visiting American musicians such as; Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, and Chick Corea. He also worked with Don Cherry and George Russell in these years. In 1972-74, he visited New York several times and worked with the Stan Getz Quartet, Sam Rivers Trio, Sheila Jordan, Steve Kuhn and Paul Bley. In 1974 Arild Andersen formed his own quartet

Kelly Friesen

Canadian-born bassist Kelly Friesen has played music ranging stylistically from straight ahead jazz and 1920’s Dixieland to classical, pop and Rhythm and Blues with such notable performance groups as Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band (1997-2001), the Julliard Symphony Orchestra, and “Sister Sledge” (We Are Family). His formal training included Classical studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto for bass, piano, voice and theory. He also received 4 years of private instruction from legendary jazz bassist Ray Brown (1993-1997) and the prominent Classical bassist Homer Mensch. Since moving to New York in 1993 he has firmly established himself as a top sideman and leader, working with jazz greats such as Herb Ellis, Bucky Pizzarelli, Etta Jones, Dick Hyman, Jerome Richardson, Frank Wess and Joe Wilder, to name a few

Damon Smith

Double bass, Improviser. Born Damon Jesse Smith on oct. 17th, 1972 in Spokane, WA. Did "freestyle bmx" bicycle riding from age 13 to 23. Started music in 1991, under the influence of Mike Watt (fIREHOSE & the minutemen) on fender bass. Lead several punk/art rock combos until 1994. Upon receiving Peter Kowald's landmark lp "Duos;Europa," Damon sold the fender bass and concentrated solely on double bass and free music. Damon's music is rooted in the tradition of "free jazz", with most of his professional experience coming from work with the orchestras and small ensembles of alto saxophonist marco eneidi, however, he is very interested in all the manifestations of free improvised music (jazz rooted or not!) around the world

Joris Teepe

Bassist Joris Teepe (1962) is the first jazz musician from The Netherlands to be able to make it in New York. Arriving in New York in 1992 with just his bass and a suitcase, he took lessons with Ron Carter, quickly met many musicians and started to work a lot. A year later he recorded his first CD, with a band co-led by Don Braden and featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Carl Allen and Tom Harrell. From that point everything really took off for Joris and he became a bassist in great demand. He has been working with the "who-is-who in Jazz", such as Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune, Rashied Ali, Billy Hart and Randy Brecker
