Equal Time
Equal Time makes creative improvised music. Sometimes we call it “free jazz” or “avant garde jazz”, but it doesn’t always come out sounding like jazz, since we bring our other influences to the table too (classic rock, electronic music, death metal, blues, prog rock, modern classical, etc.). But we all have deep roots in jazz and improvised music. Most times when we perform we do it without too much of a plan. Sometimes we’ll bring a composition, or cover a tune, but often we’ll go up on stage with no idea what’s going to happen from one moment to the next, until we get there. We like it that way, and it’s pretty fun for the audience too. We’re based primarily in the Seacoast area of New Hampshire, though our members actually live in three different states: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. Saxophonist Thom Keith and I (Tim Webb, I’m the bass player) met in 2006 when we both participated in a local community music project called the RPM Challenge

Knoxville Jazz Orchestra
Active since:
When trumpeter, arranger and composer Vance Thompson called the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra’s first rehearsal in August of 1999, he had no way of knowing the extent to which this experience would shape the next two decades of his life. Thompson had just returned home to East Tennessee after a four year stint in Chicago, and was anxious to find a way to continue writing for and playing in a pro-caliber big band. Bands of this type had been plentiful in Chicago, but there was no such outlet in Knoxville at the time. “When I looked around and thought about the players that were in the area, I realized we had enough guys to have a high quality band,” said Thompson

The Folk Songs Trio
Cinco Cidades in a cross-disciplinary project documenting the cultures and sounds of five cities across Portugal. The project culminates in a live tour across Portugal in May 2007 with musicians William Parker, Victor Gama, and Guillermo Brown (“The Folk Songs Trio”). In each city, The Folk Songs Project will create an ambient backdrop of sounds from that city, against which the musicians will create an improvised performance. The work began with field trips to five cities in March 2007, working with local communities to record local musicians, residents and ambient sounds that represent their city. The results of this work have been used to create interactive soundmaps for each city " where visitors can remix sounds and voices to create their own compositions

Kartet
Active since:
Apparently, an unsignificant formula. Usual orchestration. But then, surprise, as early as the first few bars, a freshness of inspiration which one believed to be condemned. To say simply, it's been a long time since a "jazz quartet" had sounded in a such an unorthodox way. Play-along with structure, tireless exploration of all possible combinations, independence of lines, poly-speeds, mobile architecture of the compositions... A shape of music in continuous metamorphosis as it pivots around the four players, and results in many simultaneous and complementary points of view on the same reality
