Eric Hofbauer & The Infrared Band
With the same signature blend of intelligence and whimsy heard on his innovative 2004 solo recording, American Vanity (CNM 003), and The Blueprint Project with Han Bennink's well-received 2007 release, People I Like (CNM 008), Boston-based guitarist/composer Eric Hofbauer's newest ensemble, The Infrared Band, explores his intermingling interests in wordplay, mythology and puzzles. The quartet released its debut CD, Myth Understanding (CNM 011) on June 17th, 2008.
"If there's a single overarching ethos to the band it would be 'tell your story,'" Hofbauer explains. "All my compositions have a back story or theme and I encourage each player to add their own take on those stories and to play from personal experience. When I decided to put together a permanent lineup for the band, I handpicked tenor saxophonist Kelly Roberge (who, like me, studied at Oberlin with Don Walden), bassist Michael Montgomery (who was recommended by a mutual friend) and drummer Miki Matsuki (who I worked with in Charlie Kohlhase's band). There's no role playing, I compose to each of their strengths, featuring everyone and challenging their limits."
About Steely Dan

Steely Dan
Active since:
Steely Dan has been more of a conceptual framework for inventive music-making than a typical rock band. Spearheaded by a pair of resourceful musical auteurs Donald Fagen and Walter Becker - they have done nothing by the books since launching Steely Dan in 1972. The band’s very name is a scatological reference from a novel by Beat Generation anti-hero William Burroughs. Though Steely Dan recorded prolifically for much of the Seventies, they toured for only a brief spell early in that decade, deciding they much preferred the studio to the road. This allowed them to craft a wry, nuanced and hyper-literate series of albums - seven in all, released from 1972 to 1980 - that are highly regarded by connoisseurs of pop hooks, jazz harmony and desiccating wit. Beneath the highly polished surface of Steely Dan’s music, astute listeners could hear a visceral love of and identification with the very soul of jazz

Hot House Swing Band
Active since:
HOT HOUSE was born in jam sessions in the early 1980's. Guest artists including Mike Marshall, Darol Anger and Dave Balakrishnan (Turtle Island String Quartet) helped us define our membership. Founder Bill DeKuiper chose a name that referred to the hot music of the 1920's and 30's from which the band took its cue. The influence of Count Basie, Bennie Goodman, Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelly, Fats Waller, Charlie Christian, Cootie Williams, Lester Young, et al further reveals our plilosophical heritage. Eclectic instrumentation including jazz violin enabled the band to recreate traditional jazz in an original way. A few years later a chance encounter with vocalist Elizabeth Hersey added a new twist to the band's progress

Honolulu Jazz Quartet
The Honolulu Jazz Quartet is a logical progression in the great tradition of jazz in Hawaii. The band was founded in 2001 by local bassist John Kolivas with the intent of bringing four like-minded musicians together to create a consistent, indelible sound. There are many fine jazz artists in Hawaii, but the economics of making a living as a jazz musician in the 50th State are not conducive to the same group of players working together for an extended period of time. The four members of HJQ have done just that, and the result is a beautiful blend of four individual voices into one distinctive and original voice " a voice that has thrilled audiences at the 10th Annual Hawaii International Jazz Festival, the Honolulu Symphony Pops (with full symphony arrangements), and the finest jazz settings throughout Hawaii
