Umphrey's McGee

A six-piece progressive rock band from Chicago, IL, Umphrey's McGee has built a rabid fanbase through endless touring that puts them on the road 120+ nights a year. Their constantly evolving sound channels a wide spectrum of influences, while still preserving their distinct voice through crafty songwriting. With a massive repertoire of original songs and note-perfect covers, a live show is often like flipping through the presets on your radio dial. Their A.D.D. approach to "progressive improvisation" will often utilize a set of carefully devised (and Zappa inspired) hand signals that allows them to develop structure as they orchestrate their melodic creations on the fly.

Umalali

Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project is an album overflowing with stories. There is the story of how it was made: a ten-year labor of love that started with five years of collecting songs and discovering striking female voices, followed by recording sessions in a seaside hut, and ending with exquisitely detailed and subtle production wizardry. There are the stories told in the songs: of hurricanes that swept away homes and livelihoods, a son murdered in a far-off village, the pain of childbirth and other struggles and triumphs of daily life. There are the personal stories of the women who participated in this magical recording project: mothers and daughters who, while working tirelessly to support their families, sing songs and pass on the traditions of their people to future generations. Umalali is also the story of a young, innovative music producer from Belize whose meticulous and inventive craftsmanship has resulted in what will surely be recognized as one of the most uplifting and moving albums in recent memory

Birdsongs of the Mesozoic

Active since:

Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic began in 1980 as a side project by half of Boston's now legendary Mission Of Burma, Roger Miller and Martin Swope. Miller and Swope joined forces with Rick Scott and Erik Lindgren for what was originally conceived as a recording project only. In 1983, they released a self-titled EP, Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic. With the demise of Mission Of Burma at about the same time as the EP's release, Birdongs Of The Mesozoic became a full-time band for all members. In 1984 they released another LP, Magnetic Flip, and began extensive touring to support its release. A year later they released another EP, Beat Of The Mesozoic, and again set out on tour. In 1987, Roger Miller left the group to concentrate on solo projects and was replaced by saxophonist Ken Field. Birdsongs' new lineup recorded Faultline, released on Cuneiform (Rune 19). Their second Cuneiform release, Pyroclastics (Rune 35), appeared in 1992. Shortly afterwards, guitarist Michael Bierylo replaced Martin Swope, who moved to Hawaii. In 1993 a collection of previously unreleased material from 1980-1987 featuring the band's first lineup and accompanied by a written history, The Fossil Record (Rune 55) paid tribute to Birdsongs' early years. 1995's Dancing On A'A (Rune 69) was the first Birdsongs release to feature the current lineup of the group, which has been performing ever since to widespread acclaim. Birdsongs' instrumentation is as striking as its music: two keyboards, guitar, and saxophone blend with electronic and acoustic percussion (including a Mercury Cougar hubcap and a paint can) to produce sound "...as meditative as it is physical, as rooted in classical structure and jazz improvisation as it is in rock 'n roll." (The Boston Globe) Since 1994, the members of Birdsongs have been Aritsts-In-Residence at Dartmouth College and Massachusetts College Of Art. Other recent notable performances have included the Knitting Factory in New York City, the Honolulu Academy Of Arts, the Monadnock Music Festival in New Hampshire, and Real Art Ways in Hartford, Connecticut. Members of the group also have gained attention by composing music for film and television, including, most recently, work for the Children's Television Workshop's highly respected Sesame Street series.

Many are not familiar with the King's Men Quartet, even though they are seen or heard in some very famous motion pictures. They formed in 1929 when Paramount was recruiting a quartet for the film Sweetie with Nancy Carroll. By 1934 the personnel became permanent: Ken Darby, Arranger & Bass; Rad Robinson Baritone; Jon Dodson, Lead Tenor; (Grafton) Bud Linn, Top Tenor. After appearing on and off camera in several important musical films (including Let's Go Native, Hollywood Party, Murder at the Vanities) Darby shipped an audition recording (a 16" transcription) to Paul Whiteman, who hired the quartet the same year, 1934

Deus ex Machina

Deus ex Machina were formed in 1985 in Bologna (Italy); thus far, D.E.M. have released seven albums, and have also appeared on four compilations with other artists. The artistic development of the group began with the realization of a rock-opera. It was based on an original story, inspired from a sense of the enduring struggle between Man and Nature. The opera received critical acclaim when it was performed; the critics described it as "unusual", "powerful" and "extremely elaborate". In fact, the above praise is that which has been most commonly ascribed to their music. This, coupled with their particular musical expertise and compositional skill, has led them to be described as stylistically uncategorisable, whilst maintaining the distinctive sounds of classic rock
