Trio This

The Jazz Piano Trio has long been the preferred format for many of our greatest pianists... first established by the likes of Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Bill Evans and continued to this day by such sonic mavericks as Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Hank Jones, Cecil Taylor, and Brad Melhdau, among many others. Co-leaders Barney McAll & George Schuller follow this rich tradition only as a launching pad for new ideas and pathways yet undiscovered. Joined by bassist Matt Pavolka, Trio This will keep one eye planted on history while the other searches for the nearest exit. GM Recordings is proud to announce an exciting new recording from Trio This entitled That (GM3050CD) to be released this December 2009

Beat Circus

Beat Circus was formed in 2002 in Boston, Massachusetts by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brian Carpenter, who has been its only constant member since its inception. In 2005 Carpenter began a radical shift in direction resulting in the recording of Dreamland, the first part of Carpenter's Weird American Gothic trilogy, with legendary NY producer Martin Bisi. Filled with dark narrative songs and loosely based on historical events associated with turn-of-the-century New York, Dreamland was the culmination of a two-year effort by Beat Circus. In Summer 2007 Brian Carpenter debuted the third incarnation of Beat Circus with a new concept and sound to develop the second part of the trilogy, Boy From Black Mountain, personal songs about family and fatherhood in the tradition of Southern Gospel songwriters and Southern Gothic literature.

Ellipsis

Ellipsis was born in an unmemorable suburban pub in the summer of 2005, when pianist John Stenger and bassist Ray Clemens unwound after a gig and discovered a common interest in developing a new approach to the jazz music they were playing. They soon brought in drummer Justin Leigh and formed some common goals: to play contemporary pop and rock music as a vehicle for improvisation, to write original music that could appeal to fans of both jazz and rock music, and to include in their repertoire new arrangements of classic and contemporary jazz compositions -- but above all, to play music that a younger audience could relate to. After recording an EP, Ray and John booked and played a three-week cross-country tour. The first Ellipsis gig was in Lexington, Kentucky, and the first trio gig was in November of that year in Washington, DC. Over the next two years, all three band members contributed original compositions and collectively developed arrangements of songs by Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Nick Drake, Coldplay, John Lennon, Herbie Hancock, Bjork, Joshua Redman and others. The trio also became the rhythm section for downtempo vocalist Natalie Walker and Philadelphia legend Tommy Conwell. The culmination of the group's efforts was the complete performance of the albums Kid A and Abbey Road.

Thelonious Dub

Active since:

Thelonious Dub is a Los Angeles band that began by playing reggae versions of Thelonious Monk tunes. Gaining in popularity, the quartet’s original compositions featured heavily with their audience and is captured in their 2010 second release “Master Plan B.” Formed in 2007, Guitarist Joe Bartone was the leader of the Boston band - Fat Buddah before coming to Los Angeles and meeting Mandorico’s drummer Sean Rainey. Soon after they joined up with tenor player Space Kyle and Brandon Schmidt, upright bassist for Chord Four. Together they cultivated a chemistry of sound; nurturing ideas to flow freely among them. Master Plan B was written produced by Joe Bartone and recorded by Paul Du Gre’ (L7, Weezer, Bill Frisell, Leo Kottke)

The Real Deal Big Band

Active since:

This live recording was made at Kaleidoscope Sound on June 28 & 29, 2011. I started writing the music in 2003 when I was asked to put together an 18 piece band for a steady weekend gig at a New Jersey supper club. The idea was to create instrumental music that was challenging to play but that would also be accessible to a wide audience. As I listen to the tracks I realize this is really a “nightclub band”--a big band performing at a steady gig and (dare I say it?) “entertaining” listeners, some of whom might not ordinarily be exposed to this kind of music. Although the steady gig ended in June of 2006 the band continues to perform at local jazz venues and private parties and I’ve continued to add to the book which has over 130 charts
