The Jazz Thieves

Active since:
The Jazz Thieves, through personal and evocative lyrics, passionate and soulful improvisation, and thoughtful, wide-ranging originals revitalize jazz by reconnecting it to its roots. Inspired by their heroes Duke Ellington, Tom Waits, Bill Withers and Ray Charles, they "steal" the feel, fire and fervor of 70's soul, 50's R&B, church gospel, and Mississippi Delta blues, uniting it with jazz improvisation and imagination. Their music is a modern exploration of the many stories, voices and styles that comprise and influence jazz. John Gray, the bassist, bandleader, composer, lyricist, and producer of The Jazz Thieves explores these styles in “Brooklyn Elegy”, using them to help tell his story

Greg Hatza ORGANization

A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Greg Hatza’s musical instincts came to him as early and as naturally as the ability to walk, and he was picking out blues and boogie woogie tunes on the piano around age four before starting formal lessons shortly thereafter. The Hammond B-3 became his life’s obsession as a teenager, when a friend turned him on to records by Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Ray Charles, and Johnny Hammond Smith. His first professional gig on the instrument came when he was 16, with the Frankie Scott Trio, where he played around small towns in central Pennsylvania. Because there were no jazz organ instructors at the time, Greg was largely self-taught, picking up most of his insider knowledge from the organ players at jam sessions at a local club called the Grand Hotel

Common Quartet

Common Quartet began as a band of friends in Brooklyn, hosting a weekly jam session in the culturally vibrant neighborhood of Bed-Stuy. Coming together every Monday to workshop original music and host the jam session has been a unifying ritual for the band and its audience. Their freshman release, "The Hive", featuring Steve Cardenas, is a product of that ritual, and a mile marker in a creative process that continues to evolve and flourish. The album title, "The Hive", is no accident. The music conveys an energetic and collective effort. The compositions are extremely varied in their style and mood, combining standards and lyrical original compositions in a modern presentation of the jazz tradition

The Forest Tuner

The Forest Tuner is a band established by a polish trombonist Szymon Białorucki. Its music falls outside the mainstream in rising jazz ensembles of today. The Forest Tuner is also a person, who derives happiness and peace from close listening to natural sounds of forests, mountains and rivers surrounding him. He creates melodies from what he hears and delivers them like stories, from which each listener can create their own, personal message. A debut album entitled “Tunes” released by SJ Records includes nine original compositions by Szymon Białorucki, being performed together with Mateusz Sobiechowski (piano), Adam Tadel (double bass) and Piotr Budniak (drums)
