by C. Andrew Hovan

Aside from genre leaders such as Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, and Art Blakey, relatively few drummer-led sessions have entered into the upper echelon of recorded jazz ...
Art Farmer: Work of Art

by Jon Block
My favorite (jazz) album is The Art Farmer Septet (1956 Prestige PRLP 7031 of 1953-54 sessions previously released on 10" disks). It features the arrangements and compositions of Art Farmer, Gigi Gryce and Quincy Jones. It still makes me move and groove, from the first clave click on the steaming hot Afro-Cuban Mau Mau" all the ...

Caili O'Doherty: Quarantine Dream

by Kyle Simpler
The pandemic affected people in many different ways. For some, it raised new levels of awareness about health and prevention, but for others it also became a means of artistic discovery. This latter point is certainly the case for pianist Caili O'Doherty. In spite of being careful and taking precautions, she ultimately contracted COVID. While dealing ...

Art Taylor: Two Hours at the Village Vanguard

Art Taylor was a jazz drummer whose name, sadly, rarely comes up these days. But starting in 1951, Art was in huge demand as a sideman and recording artist. Over the course of his career, according to the Jazz Discography, he recorded on 323 sessions, a sizable number. Nicknamed A.T., or, to those in the know, ...

Meet Kenneth Cobb

by Tessa Souter and Andrea Wolper
We suppose it makes sense that our latest Super Fan, a high-level mathematiciana contractor for NASA, no lesswould keep meticulous records about, well, everything, from his massive CD and LP collection, to his personal road trip mix tapes," to every concert he's attended. But applying his mathematical genius to fitting an entire week's worth of music ...
Ulysses Owens: Big Band, Big Sound

by R.J. DeLuke
Some jazz drummers, as remarkable as they may be and as successful as their careers are, just aren't suited to drive a big band. It's not for every percussionist. But every big band needs a good one or the effort will fall short. A ship needs a rudder. Ulysses Owens Jr., who started beating out rhythms ...
Archie Shepp: Blase And Yasmina Revisited

by Chris May
The three albums tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp recorded in Paris for BYG Records during one week in August 1969 tend to get overlooked in the slipstream of the dozen or so he made in the US for Impulse earlier in the decade. More is the pity, for as Blasé And Yasmina Revisited so resoundingly attests, the ...
