Prevalentemente ...

by John Eyles
Formed in 2011, the French-Italian-German quartet Die Hochstapler (The Impostors) has comprised the same four players ever since, with the instrumentation of a classic jazz quartet--saxophone, trumpet, bass and drums. Prior to the pair of recordings below, they had released three albums on Umlaut, The Braxtornette Project (2013), The Music of Alvin P. Buckley (2015), and ...

In memoriam: Alessandro Giachero

by Francesco Martinelli
Only with a very heavy heart one can write an obituary for a young friend and great musician who left this world suddenly, prematurely and unjustly, leaving his colleagues and pupils, but above all his family, in mourning. It will hopefully be useful to leave a trace of his musical contributions and a lead for future ...

Live From Berlin: Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Henrik Walsdorff & Ida Nielsen

by Martin Longley
The Schlippenbach-Walsdorff Quartet A-Trane October 31, 2018 The A-Trane is one of Berlin's best-known jazz clubs, but is surprisingly small, once discovered on its quiet street-corner. This might be a disadvantage when they're booking some of the big-name acts that appear there, resulting in lost sales from potential bookings, but ...
Cuong Vu, Phil Schurger, Cluttertones and More

by Maurice Hogue
Check out some great music from new releases, from the avant-garde/Middle Eastern/North African fusion of Ensemble Fanaa, to trumpeter Cuong Vu's quartet with Bill Frisell; from Chicago guitarist Phil Schurger to New Orleans drummer Billie Davies; from poet Vince Bell to pianist Ran Blake with singer Christine Correa. Plus a set from three excellent German groups ...
Schnell: Live at Sowieso

by Glenn Astarita
This international trio spares no effort with its plight to create hyper-mode bebop like gamma rays streaming through the universe at light speed. It's a rather amazing live set, that was probably meant to be performed in front of an audience and not in a cloistered studio setting. To say it's invigorating doesn't tell the whole ...
Enrique Haneine, Antonio Borghini and Adam Hopkins

by Maurice Hogue
Drummer Enrique Haneine is back with a new recording, The Mind's Mural, and a quartet that paints some very powerful pictures in this week's episode of One Man's Jazz. Another drummer, Carlos Lopez from Spain, contributes music from two different recordings, while Italian bassist Antonio Borghini tops that with music from three different groups and recordings ...
