Solstein: Solstein
There are polytonal and complex song structures typical of progressive music, intertwined with the infectious grooves and bouts of danceable rhythms characteristic of funk. This combination results in a dynamic and diverse sonic landscape, featuring extended instrumental passages, odd time signatures, and bold musical explorations.
Solstein's musicianship evolves via elaborate compositions, tight instrumentation, and scorching improv segments, allowing each member to shine. It is a balance between memorable hooks and rhythmic sections that invite listeners to intellectually engage with the music.
Fireworks are evident from the onset of "Intersection, as the band launches the festivities with unrelenting force, seasoned with Jason Holm-Lupo's layered synths and Carlock's solid pulse, armed with slick rolls and slippery accents. The band seamlessly works within searching themes amid electronics and Strian Larsen's soaring guitar phrasings along with his glistening improv-based trade-offs with his counterparts. Consequently, the band's seamless integration of styles helps define its panache.
"Siriusly" is set on a straight-four rock groove led by the guitarist's stinging lead lines and Brynjar Dambo's gorgeous synth lines, echoing Britain's 70s prog era. They even execute a thrusting dub groove during the bridge, followed by the soloists' zooming engagement. "The Creeper" starts as an up-tempo ballad amid Holm-Lupo's resonating Fender Rhodes work atop a catchy motif and the guitarist's jazzy picking. Overall, this is an album that should enjoy broad appeal as it proposes a fresh and often innovative spin on the above-mentioned genres.
