About Me

I am a writer, producer and coordinator in the jazz community, living in Seattle.

My jazz life began in 1972 at the age of sixteen, when the Newport Jazz Festival moved to New York City, where I was born and raised. The folks in Newport didn't like the young people of the times, and so George Wein saw fit to move the event to a more progressive environment. One of the several concerts attended was a life-changing concert at Carnegie Hall with Alice Coltrane and Keith Jarrett on the bill. Those four hours literally changed how I perceived music, and validated the passion and importance I had placed on it in relation to the rest of my life. Through high school and college, the continuance of Newport in New York and time spent at Sonny's Place on Long Island allowed my passion for the music to grow, and allowed me to learn as much about it as I possibly could. That passion followed me to Seattle, where I have taken in the vibrant jazz scene in the PNW to heart. Understanding the community aspect of the music, and its reliance on community to continue to grow and move forward into the future, I have since ventured to be an active member of the scene here. That dedication is based on the generational growth of jazz in Seattle, and making the musical available to those who choose to venture into it. Currently I am a producer, writer and coordinator living on Beacon Hill in the south end of Seattle.

My Jazz Story

I was introduced to jazz growing up in New York in the 70's. I was first attracted to the amazing virtuosity of the musicians. Over time, I began attending live shows and buying records. WRVR was the jazz station in NYC at the time, and a show by Ed Beach from 10 pm- midnight each night broadened my jazz horizons. My friend, the saxophonist Gary Smulyan made me aware of Beach's program. I have since carried forward as a jazz writer, promoter, and most of all, patron of the art.

My House Concert Story

I hosted a house concert in Seattle with the legendary flamenco jazz pianist, Chano Dominguez. We had 50 people in a family room with a Steinway B. It was $30, and the house had wine and tapas. Chano played a stunning 90 minute set, and after, a great hang with lovely people. I set this up last minute for Chano, who is a friend in town to visit his friends and family here. It was an amazing and intimate experience for all.
