Kosi: One More Cup of Coffee
Akosua Gyebi—AKA Kosi is a vocalist with a beautiful, sultry voice and a very distinctive style. Her self-produced debut album One More Cup Of CoffeeAron Marchak. It is an album which relates the tales of the night people of New York, with their ups, downs, affairs, anger,lost loves and triumphs. Kosi sings with poignancy and tender emotion and the listener is drawn into the songs and characters she paints with her music. In the opening number "Goodbye Pork Hat" Kosi uses her wonderful smoky voice as an instrument, working with Marchak's guitar creating a beautiful, heartfelt duet. 'One More Cup of Coffee' starts with with a sublime guitar riff and Kosi's blues-influenced vocals provide a gorgeous depth of quality. Kosi has a truly awesome vocal rang and she demonstrates it here. "Little Miss Generous" is more upbeat, the vocals as generous and extensive as the Miss of the title and "Coldest Summer" is a contrast with its strong, up beat lines for both guitar and voice. "Karen" is a tale of love, jealousy and hate and Kosi puts emotion into her vocals to make the song speak to the listener. The slow "Autumn in New York" is a melodious number and tells a sad tale of lost love. Kosi has a depth to her voice and subtleties which make it very listenable. "Need Your Love" delivers a driving vocal line over a strong repeating guitar riff. The beautiful guitar solo in the middle contrasts well with the other lines in the number. "The Last Shot" shows Kosi's wide range of vocals and has a Spanish feel to the opening. It is a deep, dark number with Kosi delivering some blinding vocals. The number builds and builds until the final phase with Kosi sobbing, crying, pouring out heartfelt emotions. On "Marlene" Kosi plays guitar and her vocals carry two characters vying with each other one sung in deep alto, the other responding in cool mezzo, tones the quality, and emotions carry the story told in the song into the sub conscious of the listener. "Once and Future" finishes the album in a more up-beat manner and is a solid bluesy ballad. Kosi has a vocal range which is wide and she puts a lot of emotion into her singing. Her emotive tones make her the perfect songstress to tell stories, bringing characters to life and making them memorable. Her voice has something special about it. Kosi is a lyricist, superb vocalist and above all, she uses her voice to tell a good story. This is an album to lift the spirits, take the listener deep into the heart of New York and delight in the night time.
