Rochester, NY -- Rochester's Jazz Station: 90.1 WGMC has increased its power from 2,000 watts to 15,000 watts. The new signal reaches the entire Greater Rochester area, and at least 40 miles in every direction.

The power increase is the culmination of four years of fundraising as part of the “Take Jazz Futher" capital campaign.

“We're thrilled to be reaching so many new listeners," said Jason Crane, station manager of 90.1 WGMC. “Now we are truly Rochester's jazz station."

Crane notes that the station did not raise all the money it needs to pay for the power increase, but he is optimistic.

“For years, people have been saying that they would become members if they could hear us," said Crane. “Well, we've done our part, now it's up to jazz fans to keep this music alive on the radio."

The station has also upgraded its live Webcast, which Crane hopes will attract new listeners -- and new members.

WGMC, which went on the air in 1973, is one of a handful of 24-hour jazz stations in the United States. The station plays more hours of live, local jazz than any station in the country. WGMC also focuses heavily on new music by living artists -- 50% of its broadcast day is devoted to new music.

Although the station is owned by the Greece Central School District, it is a self-funded entity.
