Jazz guitarist Oscar Peñas, originally from Barcelona, Spain, has significantly impacted the New York music scene since relocating in 2007. After earning his Masters degree from the prestigious New England Conservatory, Peñas began to showcase his exceptional talent locally and internationally. His original compositions seamlessly blend influences from classical music, jazz, and other genres, resulting in innovative and deeply engaging soundscapes. Peñas has collaborated with some of the most respected names in jazz, including Mike Stern, Greg Leisz, Ron Carter, Paquito D'Rivera, Gil Goldstein, and Esperanza Spalding.
Following the success of his acclaimed jazz-classical suite Almadraba," which features legendary bassist Ron Carter on the album, the piece premiered live—as an eight-piece band, [a jazz quartet, and a classical quartet]—at the BAM Next Wave Festival in 2018. In 2024, Peñas received an NYSCA grant to create a new suite that captures the essence of New York's diverse boroughs through a groundbreaking piece titled Remote Hoods." His time crafting this musical work has generated fresh ideas and imaginative sounds for five musicians, celebrating the city's vibrant, diverse cultural landscape in a multi-movement piece with an eclectic mix of electric and acoustic elements.
Performing with his trio at the legendary jazz club, The Iridium, on May 29 at 8:30 PM, Peñas takes a break from composing to engage audiences with an acoustic ensemble, featuring himself on electric guitar, Corentin Le Hir on double bass, and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums.
Oscar has selected a repertoire of new and old originals, including a bolero, a tribute to Jim Hall, jazz waltzes, and blue-tinged songs for an evening of infectious groove and lyricism.
