Among many items in the ongoing mini Aum festival at the Stone are two that incite a few key taps.
According to Mr. Aum:
“The focus is on jazz forward / avant-garde soul, with select excursions elsewhere. I thank The Stone for the opportunity to ask some of my favorite musicians & human beings to share some very good time together in late June 2011."
The 21st begins with another spin of the sax duet kaleidoscope that Mr. Shipp ever turns. These duets are a marvel as they are so portable. As long as a working piano is at hand, (no small feat in itself), it's just walk in and go. It lends itself well to distillation.

“While Mateen plays a battery of instruments from saxohpone to flute, it appears that he sticks to clarinet throughout this recording. The high woody sound of the clarinet makes from a fascinating contrast with Shipp's often low and probing keyboard playing. Shipp's piano playing is clearly articulated and patient whether his is laying down a foundation for Mateen to improvise over, or engaging him in a head-to-head duet. Shipp lays down beautifully stark and dark toned chords and notes, and Mateen swirls and probes them in a natural and organic way."
And then on the 26th a Boston delegation wends its way to the house that Zorn built as well as a representative from Connecticut.

Joe Morris Quartet

The Hobbs Trio has an uncanny resemblance to the original Fully Celebrated Orchestra, and so it is. Then, in an interesting Yankee morphing, the trio becomes a quartet with Joe Morris as pilot and Luther Gray covering the shift in the engine room.
