It's the importance of 'the hang' and how social collision and spending time together can augment the music. I think that that is also part of Scott's mission, and why Turtle Bay ends up making such great records.
—Ricky Alexander, Clarinetist/Saxophonist
NYC jazz record label Turtle Bay Records has announced the launch of their new video series, On the Back Porch. The series features eight talented jazz musicians from around the US, with in-depth interviews and their acoustic performances of early jazz music standards. Shot on the back porch at the home of TBR Founder and Executive Producer Scott Asen, the series is hosted by Megg Farrell best known as Sweet Megg) and Ricky Alexander. The series will kick off on Friday, March 3rd, and roll out through August 4th, 2023 on the TBR YouTube channel.

The On the Back Porch series was originally conceived by label owner Scott Asen with the goal of creating a community among jazz artists in New York. Co-host Ricky Alexander, an accomplished clarinetist/saxophonist, described “the importance of 'the hang' and how social collision and spending time together can augment the music. I think that that is also part of Scott's mission, and why Turtle Bay ends up making such great records.”

Pianist Dalton Ridenhour, Banjo player Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Pianist Jesse Gelber, Trumpet player Jon-Erik Kellso, Drummer Kevin Dorn, Trumpet player Mike Davis, Bassist Rob Adkins and singer Queen Esther are the featured artists in the series.

Farrell said, “We chose these artists because these are people whom we work with who all have in common a deep personal style of musicianship that intrigued us. Most of the time we see each other at gigs and are too busy playing to have time to ask questions or really hang out.”

Alexander added, “Because of the intimate nature of playing music together, we already can tell a lot about someone's style and influences, so it was very natural and easy to ask questions about what we heard in these amazing players and where it all came from.”

On the Back Porch video series will be available on the TBR YouTube channel, with new episodes premiering every month through August 4, 2023. Don't miss the first of the videos on Friday, March 3rd, featuring Dalton Ridenhour, and be sure to check turtlebayrecords.com for updates on upcoming episodes.
