Tonight! Beacons in Jazz at the New School!

TONIGHT! BEACONS IN JAZZ return to The New School as part of all- star celebration concert! Reggie Workman, Jimmy Heath and Barry Harris take the stage with fellow all-stars Roy Hargrove, Charli Persip, Benny Powell, and Charles Tolliver for great musical moments at a 20th anniversary celebration concert at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Additional performers will include former New School Beacons in Jazz award winners, alumni and faculty including Jane Ira Bloom, John Ellis, Jim Hall, Chico Hamilton, Fred Hersch, Peter Bernstein, Junior Mance, Vickie Natale, Bernard “Pretty" Purdie, Jaz Sawyer, Marcus Strickland and others.

In 1941, The New School was the first university to offer a course in jazz. A half century of dynamic public programming followed, which featured outstanding jazz artists from Art Tatum and Louis Armstrong to Jon Hendricks and Pat Metheny. Today, alumni such as Brad Mehldau, Robert Glasper, and Miri Ben-Ari, are having a remarkable impact on jazz and other contemporary music, and represent some of the world1s finest and most innovative musicians.

This concert marks a unique celebration of the personal and professional relationships that have united alumni and their illustrious jazz mentors over the last 20 years, and points the way to new alliances, new energy, and new music for the next 20 years and beyond.
