New York, NY- Arts for Art is proud to present the first of four weeks to be devoted to Vision Dance Music Collaborations. The week of performances in December is titled StringsDanceVoiceDrums. Each month from December through March, Arts for Art will present six days of unique collaborative performances of cutting-edge dancers and choreographers with some of downtown's most explosive avantJazz improvisers. These types of collaborations have been frequent since the loft era of the 1970s.
The first week features an all-star cast of choreographers from throughout the globe, whose common link is their work with musicians of the jazz avant-garde. The performances will include free improvisations along with more structured choreography, and the broad range of approaches will reflect the equally broad range of backgrounds among the participants. Vision Art" or avantJazz is not limited by any particular tradition but may in any instance utilize any tradition. It is art built on the development of craft, with each artist using a voice that is uniquely his/her own. It is art with a most decidedly disciplined disregard for tradition and boundaries.
Each evening will conclude with a musical set featuring the Vision improvisers who performed throughout the evening. Arts for Art has laid the groundwork for Vision Collaborations presentations both within the music and dance communities through our ten years of Vision Festival presentations. Audience interest in the dance component of the Vision Festival has made the Vision Collaborations the essential next step in our efforts to elevate this approach to choreography and improvisation.
