This week sees the Made in the UK concert series return to New York at venues throughout Manhattan.
Legendary jazz pianist, Stan Tracey, kicks off proceedings with two shows at Dizzy's tonight in his first appearance in New York since touring with the Ted Heath Orchestra in 1959. Tracey's 1965 recording 'Under Milk Wood' is widely heralded as one of the greatest albums in European jazz. At 83, he is playing as well as ever with an individual style drawing on a love of Monk and Ellington, an influence which extends to his own formidable compositional skills.
On Tuesday 15th June, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, where Tracey was house pianist for many years working with Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Ben Webster and many others, will be celebrating its recent 50th anniversary with two shows at Birdland featuring the James Pearson Trio (the club's current house band) along with special guest performances from Ian Shaw, China Moses and many more.
Get The Blessing, who perform at Joe's Pub on Wednesday 16th June, are an award-winning jazz-rock band whose rhythm section of Jim Barr and Clive Deamer are well known for being the engine room of UK trip-hop stars Portishead. Described by The Independent as Heavyweights of the contemporary jazz scene, Get The Blessing's debut album won them a prestigious BBC Jazz Award for best album.
Finally, Gwyneth Herbert plays the Living Room at 10pm on Thursday 17th June. Herbert returns to New York for the first time since her successful two week run at the Algonquin Oak Room in 2005. Touted as the female Jamie Cullum and pushed by Universal, she subsequently walked away from the recording contract to work on her own heady mixture of folk and jazz-influenced originals.
These concerts are part of the Made in the UK concert series, which includes ten British jazz concerts during the Xerox Rochester Jazz Festival. The series is promoted by ESIP with support from Scottish Arts Council and Jazz Services.
