(by subway: #1 train to Christopher Street station)
For ten years now, pianist Sacha Perry has been perhaps the most familiar of the Smalls performers, appearing 2-3 times weekly between Smalls and Fat Cat in many contexts as the pianist of choice. The New York-born Perry excelled on piano early, studying both at Mannes School of Music and Hunter College High School beginning at age 11. In his teenage years, he studied with Barry Harris and was welcomed into the inner circle of New York's bop pianists as its most promising new constituent. He came by his mastery of the intricacies of the bebop idiom honestly through his association with some of its elder masters, and is one of the very few young pianists who can truly claim to be an authentic and masterful voice. He may be one of the most knowledgeable people in the world on the music of Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and Elmo Hope, who, along with the late Frank Hewitt, he also drew upon as influences. But his statements are all his own, and his poetry is unmistakably his. As you will hear, his compositional skills in this harmonically and melodically rich idiom are virtually without parallel. Perry will be accompanied by his long-standing associate Ari Roland on bass. Roland has been playing with Sacha for over fifteen years, and they have developed into one of the most advanced piano-bass pairings in jazz with their finely filigreed and highly sophisticated counterpoint. Roland has of course received much acclaim recently for his accompaniment on the historic Frank Hewitt recordings. We hope you'll be able to join us.
