SFJAZZ Collective
Celebrated jazz artists perform together in Ottawa for the first time

“Sheer, out-of-the-box musicality… revealed the joys and complexities of free improvising." – Los Angeles Times

Ottawa (Tuesday, February 3, 2009) – Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Miguel Zenon, Robin Eubanks, Renee Rosnes, Matt Penman and Eric Harland are each giants of the jazz genre. The Ottawa Jazz Festival is proud to present all seven musicians performing together in their first Ottawa appearance as San Francisco’s SFJAZZ Collective at Dominion-Chalmers United Church on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 8pm.

The SFJAZZ Collective honors and interprets the music of jazz masters. Their repertoire has included the music of John Coltrane (2005), Thelonious Monk (2006), Herbie Hancock (2007) and Wayne Shorter (2008). 2009 will find the Collective interpreting the music of the legendary pianist McCoy Tyner.

Launched in 2004, the SFJAZZ Collective is distinguished not just by degree, but diversity of talent: each member is not only a celebrated instrumentalist, but also an outstanding composer and arranger, and most are among today’s most lauded band leaders. The Collective’s current line-up also strikes a perfect balance among founding members, other multi-year veterans, and exciting newcomers.

The front line horns includes two past DownBeat “Artist of the Year" honorees, saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas, both members since 2007; three-time DownBeat “#1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist" and founding member Miguel Zenon; and 2008 newcomer trombonist Robin Eubanks, a two-time DownBeat “Trombonist of the Year." The incendiary Collective rhythm section boasts founding member and acclaimed Blue Note recording artist Renee Rosnes on piano plus two four-year Collective veterans: bassist Matt Penman, one of the most in-demand sidemen on the international scene; and drummer Eric Harland, famed for his work with Charles Lloyd, McCoy Tyner, and other jazz legends.

Live 2008: 5th Annual Concert Tour the Collective’s fifth limited-edition (5,000 copies) set documenting the Collective’s full repertoire was released on October 1, 2008. Available exclusively from SFJAZZ—the leading non-profit jazz organization on the West Coast—the deluxe, numbered 3-CD set is the definitive record of this all-star jazz ensemble’s fifth year. Live 2008 features the Collective’s 2008 repertoire, including new arrangements of the work of Wayne Shorter and original compositions by Collective members.

Tickets are $50 for Reserved Section, $43 for General Admission and $25 for Students 25 and under with valid ID, and are available at the Ottawa Jazz Festival office, Compact Music and all 3 CD Warehouse locations; or Ticketmaster (613) 755-1111 or icketmaster.com.
