EARSHOT JAZZ PRESENTS JAZZ INNOVATORS IN SPECIAL MAY CONCERTS

Sam Rivers Trio w/ Doug Mathews & Anthony Cole Thursday, May 19, 8pm at Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park

Legendary jazz innovator Sam Rivers has been called “a National Treasure." The venerable saxophonist, flutist, pianist, and composer who, approaching 82 years of age, is still playing with extraordinary energy and inventiveness, is one of the most important figures in progressive jazz. He brings to town his highly original trio, in which drummer Anthony Cole and bassist Doug Mathews also double on saxes and bass clarinet. The ensemble performs in the acoustical warmth of the Seattle Asian Art Museum’s performance auditorium. Admission: $14 general; $12 members, students, and seniors; tickets available at 206-547-6763, online at www.earshot.org, and at the door.

Ellery Eskelin & Sylvie Courvoisier Friday, May 20, 8pm at Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park

Ellery Eskelin is one of the leading tenor saxophonists on the creative New York and national scenes. He has produced a prodigious amount of fresh and ever-expansive music over the last 20 years, always at the forward edges of jazz. Here, he teams with Sylvie Courvoisier, a stunning Swiss improvising pianist, now resident of New York, who has quickly staked a claim to being essential to the future of piano art. The inventive duo re-imagines the jazz tradition with depth, beauty and virtuosity. Admission: $12 general; $10 members, students, and seniors; tickets available at 206-547-6763, online at www.earshot.org, and at the door.

Also coming in May: The Seattle Art Museum and Earshot Jazz present stylish New York pianist Pete Maliverni, with vocalist Jody Sandhaus, at the SAM downtown lobby as part of the ongoing Art of Jazz Series, May 12th, at 5:30pm. Free with museum admission.
