Originally composed by Ennio Morricone for the 1971 film Sacco and Vanzetti, the music of this 1970s masterpiece is rearranged by the jazz quartet in an original and modern version thanks to the almost hip-hop modal and rhythmic sounds in the central part. The suite ends with the famous Here's to you, which became famous thanks to the contribution of Joan Baez who wrote the text as a hymn to freedom and freely inspired by Vanzetti's statements in prison. In this part of the suite the music veers towards Baroque sounds typical of the Italian 1600s.

Patrizio Destriere comments on the piece as follows: “Playing Maestro Morricone's music is always a very complex operation, one could say that it is like trying to reproduce Leonardo da Vinci's Gioconda or Michelangelo's Pietà.

The Maestro's music is a world heritage and each of us is linked for one reason or another to the soundtracks of the 600 and more films that the Maestro has set to music, not counting the Academic production and the various collaborations he has had.

Therefore, approaching his work puts any artist in awe; starting from this, the album Portrait of Ennio is a sort of perspective vision revisited according to my sensitivity and that of the musicians who have played with me towards Ennio's musical corpus. A vision linked to the jazz side of the Maestro, who, as per his statements, has always considered a music distant from his soul; but that in his production is present with valuable material, just remember the films of the early '80s permeated by jazz-style soundtracks.

Our contribution was to enhance this vision of his work by developing it with our language with well-finished arrangements and sounds that go beyond commercial cataloguing.

wants to be the portrait that encompasses the many facets of a complex and ingenious composer such as Ennio Morricone.

In this context, the “Sacco and Vanzetti Suite" (from the film Sacco and Vanzetti 1971) is a less well-known page of the Maestro but no less fascinating. We have chosen to include the music of this '70s masterpiece on the disc with a reinterpretation brought to the present day, inserting modal sounds, almost hip hop rhythms in the central part and echoes of baroque music towards the end.

In this passage we have summarized all the nuances of the jazz side of Maestro Ennio Morricone's music".

The album Portrait of Ennio is not only a tribute to the music of Maestro Morricone, but a personal portrait of how the quartet, led by saxophonist Patrizio Destriere, sees and hears the music that accompanied famous and less famous films over the of half a century of production. From “Put one evening at dinner" to “The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean", from “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" to “Once Upon a Time in America".

The quartet is composed by Patrizio Destriere (soprano and tenor saxophones), Claudio D'Amato (piano), Giuseppe Civiletti (double bass) and Giampaolo Scatozza (drums).
