PIZZARELLI FAMILY TO OPEN 34RD SEASON OF HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ

New York, NY September 27, 2006 Jack Kleinsinger's “Highlights in Jazz," New York's longest running jazz concert series, is pleased to present their opening night concert “Fun With Jazz," featuring the Pizzarellis--Bucky, John and Martin.

Like the Heath Brothers, Elvin, Thad and Hank Jones, and the Marsalis dynasty, The Pizzarellis are one of the premier jazz families. The patriarch, Bucky, who appeared at the very first “Highlights In Jazz" concert 34 years ago, began his professional career in 1943 at age 17, playing in dance bands. His career highlights include stints with Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show Band and touring with Benny Goodman. A versatile guitarist and solid rhythm player, his extraordinary skill as a rhythm player places him in the company of the great rhythm players like Freddie Greene and Carl Kress. He is considered the only guitarist besides George Van Eps to play the seven-string electric guitar exclusively.

Son John Pizzarelli, who made his first appearance at “Highlights" at age 15 alongside saxophone legend Zoot Sims, has had a multi-faceted career as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader. Internationally known for classic standards, late-night ballads, and the cool jazz flavor he brings to his performances and recordings John has had an enormously successful career. He's toured the world, played every major jazz festival, appeared on television programs like the Jay Leno Show, and made many recordings, his latest being Dear Mr. Sinatra.

Younger brother Martin, the bass-playing member of the family, is a first-class musical talent who, in addition to accompanying the family, is an in-demand session player on the jazz scene.

Also featured on this evenings program are returning “Highlights" favorites, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon and the ever- versatile bassist/vocalist/songwriter Jay Leonhart.

There will be special surprise guest on this show!

All concerts will take place at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (Borough of Manhattan Community College), 199 Chambers Street (between Greenwich and West Street).

The tickets are $30.00 and $27.50, for students. They can be purchased at the theater box office or by calling (212) 220-1460.
